I have bad headaches that start w/ parotid gland swelling/pain & develop quickly. They go away after 2 hours or so. What is the connection? Cause?

If sure its Parotid: If the parotid gland intermittently swells and then resolves, especially if swells when seeing food, it is quite diagnostic for an obstruction in or more likely in the glands duct, called stenson's duct. It is called commonly a sialolith. Good luck! ...Read more

Yes, you should: get to a doctor because it could be parotitis or stone in Swensen's duct, especially if it is very painful. It could also be inflamed lymph node. Either way, you might need antibiotics to get better. ...Read more

Parotid stone: Make sure you are on antibiotics if there is swelling. Also stay well hydrated (drink plenty water), take NSAIDs like Ibuprofen or Naproxen scheduled doses for 1-2 weeks, and encourage daily salivation to get the gland working - hard lemon candy or lemon wedges 3 times per day. ...Read more

Needs evaluation: 80% of parotid lesions are benign meaning 20% are malignant. Has there been an ultrasound or MRI to confirm it is a cyst? Cystic parotid lesions could be benign lymphoepithelial lesion, warthins tumor, etc. Some cysts may harbor cancers in the wall so suggest ultrasound and needle drainage of cyst and needle biopsy of any tumor in the wall.
