Depends!: In the past, we aimed for the lowest blood pressure you could tolerate w/o any side effects. In other words, as low as possible w/o passing out or feeling weak & woozy. In reality, most patients only achieve <140/90 which recent studies have demonstrated appears to be good enough. In fact, more recent studies suggest that achieving less than 130/80 if diabetic doesn't improve outcomes. ...Read more

Should blood pressure be higher sitting down or standing up. Wat causes low blood pressure.

Standing (at first): When you stand, less blood returns from the legs --> lowers cardiac output --> lowers blood pressure. This should be a minor and transient effect. If you have problems with orthostatic hypotension, though, the blood pressure drop may be more severe & prolonged, and may even result in dizziness or in extreme cases fainting. ...Read more

I know potassium can lower blood pressure but can a symptom of low potassium be low blood pressure. Conflicting info on net?

Ignore this stuff: This is pop medicine. If your potassium is running low, it may be important to find why, especially if it is well below the reference range. Once low potassium is found, talk of symptoms is moot. And "low blood pressure" in someone who is not obviously sick is never a real problem. A good relationship with a primary care physician is something you deserve. Best wishes. ...Read more

Why is a sitting blood pressure reading higher than a standing blood pressure reading?

Why is a sitting blood pressure reading higher than a standing blood pressure reading?

Gravity: The short answer is the effect of gravity. When you stand up, your blood will "pool" in your lower extremities. The body has to increase the heart rate and vascular tone in order to keep blood pumping upwards towards your arms, neck and head. It is typical for the blood pressure to fall a little bit when you stand up; if it falls too much, this can be abnormal though, and should be evaluated. ...Read more
