In an infant, the space where two skull-bone sutures join forms a membrane-covered "soft spot" called a fontanel (fontanelle). The fontanels allow for growth of the skull during an infant's first year. The fontanels should feel firm and very slightly curved inward to the touch. A tense or bulging fontanel occurs when fluid builds up in the skull cavity or when pressure increases in the brain (increased intracranial pressure). When the infant is crying, lying down, or vomiting, the fontanels may look like they are slightly bulging, but they should return to normal when the infant is in ...Read more

My 6 month old has a bulging fontanel. All tests (mri, CT scan, bloodwork, etc) have come back negative. What else should I push for. ?
Depends: A bulging fontanel can be normal depending on the position the child is in when it is evaluated. A crying child who is lying down will almost always have a bulging fontanel. A bulge indicates an increase in pressure - either in the skull itself, or within the superior sagittal sinus (the giant vein which lies just beneath the fontanel). A spinal tap is warranted to check the intracranial pressure. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

What can I do to correct my bulging armpits? My armpits are kind of convex shped which look really ugly when i wear a sleevless top. What are the medical procedures available to correct this and the treatment duration and costs associated with this?
Sorry : Sorry it took so long to answer this question. The treatment options for this region depend largely on two things, skin tone and lipodystrophy (excess fat). Thus, things like age, current weight, and weight gain/loss history are important in determine treatment options. A great outcome occurs when the appropriate treatment is paired with the problem at hand. Liposuction is the most likely option, but this is only a good option when skin elasticity is intact. Good skin elasticity is generally present in those who are relatively young and who have not had dramatic shifts in weight. When one loses excess weight, the skin may not rebound. So when liposuction is performed, only yields great results when the skin retracts. If skin elasticity is poor (i.e. If stretch marks are present) direct excision of skin and involved fat may be required. A physical exam would be required to give a more detailed assessment. A free consultation can be attained from most plastic surgeons. Liposuction is generally $1000 to $2000 per region. Direct excision may cost $1500 to $3000 depending on the location of your physician and experience. Stick with surgeons who are board certified by the american board of plastic surgeons. Hope this helps! ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
