1 foot arch much lower than other. Can't afford custom orthotics. Will dr scholls machine tell if feet are different to buy 2 different supports?

Be seen: You may want to be seen. The bigger question is really why one arch is higher than the other and are orthotics for that even appropriate. It is unusual for one arch to be higher than the other without something being wrong with one or both if the feet. Tarsal coalition is just one example if this and in general an orthotic would not be real helpful. ...Read more

How do I determine (without an X-ray machine) if I have broken or dislocated the small toe on my right foot?

How do I determine (without an X-ray machine) if I have broken or dislocated the small toe on my right foot?

It can be difficult: Without an x-ray, you may not be able to diagnose a fracture. Some fractures are obvious without an x-ray but some are not. Dislocations often times are easier to diagnose without an x-ray but you won't necessarily be able to diagnose a toe dislocation without an x-ray. In short, if you are concerned about the possibility of a toe fracture or dislocation, see an orthopaedic doctor and get x-rays. ...Read more

While at doc, a machine with leads was put on arm/foot to tell how hydrated I was, as well as body fat. Does it use electric current? Is that harmful?

Body Comp Analyzer: No
The current is minimal and not harmful at all
I am an American Board of Obesity Medicine certified physician and I do this all the time
BMI and weight can be deceptive
These machines can reasonably tell how much fat, muscle and water you have
Muscles help you to have a good metabolism
Muscles help you to burn the calories
Fat does not

Bunion Surgery (Right foot), 10 weeks ago, I able to only walk for 3 hours before it swells (nothing vigorous), is elliptical machine better?

More Healing.: Your swelling is likely due to the severity of the bunionectomy. Generally the more work done to correct the problem the longer it takes to make a full recovery. The swelling is demonstrating that the Soft tissue repair has not completed. There may be some instability and the swelling is a response. You would be wise to ask the surgeon if this is normal. ...Read more

Had ACL surgery 3 weeks ago, as I was doing my rehab exercises, guess I hurt myself. I have shooting pain when knee fully extended, from glute to my foot. It's not been healed in a week. Should I worry?

Can resting sprained ankle/no rehab and limping for months after the injury cause achilles tightness and bottom of foot pain (metatarsalgia, plantar f)?

Compensation....: Limping for months, with or without pain, can cause a change in the mechanics of your normal walk. This is known as compensatory change or compensation. As the body compensates, you can expect that new problems such as muscle tightness and weight shifting will develop. Treating these new symptoms can be even more challenging than treating the original ones. A Healthtap specialist can help. ...Read more

Where can I get a more holistic approach to severe pain in lower leg and foot? I had an episode of transverse myelitis in late 2005 which affected my lower extremities from waist down. After treatment & rehab, I regained use of my legs but continued to exp

Needless: Needless to say, I assume the cause of your transverse myelitis was investigated, and you don't have an underlying infection.

That being said, have you tried acupuncture?

Also, one of the hard lessons we have learned from pain management clinics is that the mistake we continue to make in trying to manage pain is we try one thing, when that doesn't work or isn't enough, we abandon that and try something else. When that isn't enough, we abandon that and then do something else.

What we should be doing is add a different treatment modality to the first, and if that's not enough, add a third, and so on. It turns out that 2+2=5 when it comes to pain management, and it might take a combination of medication, physical therapy, tens treatment, acupuncture and perhaps a trigger point or spinal injection to get you to a point where you can live comfortably.

I hope this advice helps you. Chronic pain is extremely difficult to live with. Good luck. ...Read more

Exercise bike, treadmill, elliptical, ski machine etc. If you had the choice of only one, what would it be?

Doesn't matter: The one you choose should be the one you're going to use. The type of machine is less important than how much you use it and whether you keep challenging yourself. In order to improve your fitness you have to keep doing a little more than is comfortable -- exercise in the zone of discomfort., but not pain the type of machine -- or no machine -- is a personal choice. ...Read more

What could be the reason my foot goes numb when riding stationary bike, usually after 20 minutes, it's new &i exercise everyday..

Focused pressure: Check the tightness of your shoes, the condition of your shoes and the position of your feet on the pedals. Repetative focused pressure can do this. See someone in a bike store to check your shoes if you are clipping in. Often the position of the clip can make a difference. Ease up on that foot and let the other leg do the work for a few minutes. Good workout technique to alternate. Good luck. ...Read more
