My baby is 11 weeks old, acid reflux, similac spit up for 5 weeks now. She has been vomiting curdled milk for 2 weeks now. Help!

It's normal: As soon as milk hits the acid in the stomach it curdles and smells terrible, but if your baby is happy, growing and has soft poops she doesn't need any medicine or a change in formula. It is only when babies are in pain from spitting up that we give antacid medicine and unfortunately it does not stop them from spitting up. Sitting her up for a half hour after she eats and burping well does help. ...Read more

Can a 6w baby choke on spit up or reflux? She coughs after swallowing and sometimes seems to gasp for air. She clears her throat even while sleeping.

Yes: This can be a serious condition, and yes, a baby can choke from reflux material. Raise head of crib/bassinette slightly and keep upright after feeds. Also, I would suggest you ask her pediatrician about a swallow study, where they actually watch with special formula as she feeds and swallows to see if any is going into her lungs and the whole swallowing mechanism is working right. ...Read more

What are the chunks in my mucus I spit up?

"Chunks"?: Sounds like you mean "tonsil stones" or "tonsilar calculi" or "tonsilloliths." they're mostly just calcium, usually about the size of a grain of rice and they smell horrible if you mash 'em! They are not an infection. They appear in some people and not others because of differences in the structure of tonsils. Don't worry about them, just don't ever bite 'em — they taste awful! ...Read more

My son is 6 weeks old. It seems mostly at night he occasionally has reflux without spit up. He will make a gulping sound and then screems. Is it reflux?

Temporary discomfort: If it is just a "gulping" and a "brief scream" you may not need to do anything. It is possible he has some gerd, but seemingly not significant. Gulping likely means he breathes in too quickly and swallowed some air causing some distention of esophagus which causes some discomfort, but once that is passed to the stomach, he is then ok. Feeding normally and gaining wt then ok. Consult doc. Good luck. ...Read more

Spitting Mucus: Hello! Newborns may spit up mucus leftover from amniotic fluid up to 72 hrs after birth but tends to resolve sooner. If the saliva seems excessive, a doc visit is needed to check for issues of the esophagus. Spitting up milk is also common in newborns and should be discussed with your doc to ensure it's normal infant reflux. My 4 mth old has reflux they have her on Zantac and reglan (metoclopramide) bit cont. To spit up constantly what could be the cause?

Reflux: Reflux in infants is quite common. Medications are used to help treat the symptoms. Zantac and Reglan (metoclopramide) are the mainstays. Most infants will outgrow the reflux by 8- 1-0 months. Mine did. If they continue to reflux despite medical mgt and lose weight or suffer pain then surgery is the next step. Thickening the formula with rice eal and sleep position can also help use gravity to prevent reflux. ...Read more

My 3mo old is spitting up clear liquid. Also, tends to be mucusy, curdled, and normal spit up. Could this be acid reflux? She is on Nutramigen.

Possible: Most babies have some reflux particularly with burping or a full stomach. The kind of formula has no effect. As long as there is no blood or pain and your baby is thriving it doesn't create a problem. Feeding smaller amounts more frequently and thickening the formula with 1 teaspoonful of a baby cereal per 4 ounces of formula will sometimes help as will quiet activities after feeding. All the best ...Read more

Try prune juice 1st: At that age I try simple things first. The sugars and solids in prune juice are not fully absorbed in babies and act somewhat like what miralax does. A single ounce twice a day will loosen most babies within a day or two. ...Read more

Yes: Regurgitation is a fairly common symptom of acid reflux. Looking through your medicine list, I see no reflux medicines currently. Bright purple: Continue to observe him and if it continues take him and a sample into his doctor's office. Was he given anything else? Like Tylenol (acetaminophen)? Also, check the Colorado of his stools and urine. All the best. Bad reflux is hard to treat but he should get better. Make sure he is growing and often small frequent feeds without burping work best, along with thickened feedings. ...Read more

Gum disease: Bleeding gums can be a sign that you are at risk for, or already have, gum disease. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless toxic “plaque” on teeth causing the gums to become inflamed and to easily bleed. Aspiration of stomach contents into the airway may cause cough, respiratory illness and congestion for example. As she gains weight, the dose may need to be adjusted.
