Common problem: I find decreased ankle flexibility in more than half my patients.Some have this from very early on as a congenital shortening of the achilles tendon.Most kid activities today do not involve those that would stretch this tendon ; play gradually builds the calf muscle, aggravating the problem. Doing squats, wall pushes, dips and using bungee cords to pull the forefoot up in a figure 8 movement can help. ...Read more

Progressive return: Once your pain & swelling is under control, you regain full range of motion & strength... You can use a home exercise program in many cases (band exercises, stretching, and balance) to help with the early stages of recovery, but as you return to sport (w/ brace) you should make sure you are able to perform the basics, before you try to fully practice/ play. Have it evaluated.: Pain may last a long time following a foot or ankle injury. An x-ray can show if there is an underlying fracture. You may have a soft tissue injury if it is just a sprain and may have damaged the muscle, tendon, or ligaments in the area.
