Skin lesions: May just be dry skin (try moisturizing cream several times a day; avoid very hot baths/showers & harsh soaps). Might be sun damage from too much exposure; see doc for evaluation; actinic keratoses are easily treated via many methods. Use sunscreen when outdoors, even on cloudy days. If blisters form, may be recurrence of shingles (not common) but best treated early. ...Read more

My hard palate is a little yellow and I've had cold symptoms for about a week. (not tasting, stuffed up, etc.) some small red patches on roof of mouth?

Mouth eruption: Your symptoms seem viral in nature, and the patches may be a specific type. Upper respiratory illnesses such as sinus infection can present similarly with nasal stuffiness and diminished taste. Bacterial infection such as strep throat is not usually a palatal disease. However, mononucleosis is always a concern for a range of symptoms and can be tested for. An exam is in order if you don't improve. ...Read more

I had ophthalmic shingles back in June 2017. The redness in my cornea persists after I stop Tobradex. Is it ok to use Tobradex every time the redness is back? Is there another medication that can help treat this condition or has this become chronic?

See your ophth: Tobradex is a combination antibiotic and steroid that should be used at the direction of an experienced ophthalmologist. Talk to your doctor for an evaluation and to see if you also need other treatments to manage ongoing or recurrent inflammation. This is important, because it can have a long term effect on your vision. ...Read more

Throat sore 2.5 days, no other symptom. Poss. Exposure to strep. Just looked--looks like canker sore surrounded by redness, s. Palate. No worry?

May be viral: If there is a single sore and you have no other symptoms (no headache, no stomach ache, no fever), the sore throat may well be a virus. Treatment for that is supportive. If you develop any of the above symptoms in addition, however, and do not have symptoms such as stuffy nose or cough, see your doctor to make sure you do not have strep. ...Read more

How long can you have an tooth abcess for without not much swelling, I have had mine for 3yrs causin redness on front gums@pain side palate?

Tip of the iceberg!: While you have been lucky (actually unlucky!) for not having much swelling, what is probably going on inside your jaw is a serious infection destroying bone and possibly effecting other teeth either now or in time. I have personally seen patients with large untreated infections and infected cysts become permanently numb and lose teeth from letting these types of infections go untreated. ...Read more

My dentist told me that stopping smoking has caused soreness & redness in the palate of my mouth. Has been there for 1 month plus now is this common?

Hmmmmmm.: I'm not sure if I personally would agree with that observation. Smoking can and will cause changes to the soft tissues of your mouth, including the palate. I would think that over time, the tissues will revert back to their natural healthy state, unless there has been some irreversible damage. You might want to check with an oral surgeon regarding the health of the tissues of your palate. ...Read more

Atypical odontalgia: Is a poorly understood pain disorder that is best defined as persistent pain in apparently healthy teeth or adjacent oral tissues (e.g., alveolar bone, gingiva, palate). AO can follow seemingly innocuous dental procedures such as crown preparation, drilling of dentine and teeth cleaning. Rec.: see orofacial pain specialist for evaluation and treatment. ...Read more
