Detailed history.: There are a whole lot of conditions that will cause big toe joint pain. Inflammation of the capsule, bone cartilage and tendons as well as a metabolic problem are all to be considered. Your age certainly limits some of the possibilities. Having the toe evaluated will immediately reduce the number possibilities. Further testing may be necessary to get to the immediate cause. ...Read more

?athlete's foot: You could consider a trial of athlete's foot spray (usually lotrimin or tinactin spray) which are active against yeasts,e.g. Candida albicans. It is a moist environment that allows for growth of these fungi on the skin of the feet. Give it a try for the next few days and determine if it settles down. See podiatrist: It's hard to say what is causing the discomfort. Possibly different shoes could help, but see a podiatrist to be sure. In the meantime, try on different running shoes to see if any other kind make it less noticeable.. Gout?: With no trauma and pain in joints particularly known for its' love of the big toe (halux), it could be uric acid crystals settling into joint. Age and diet related, so just a wild guess. Big toe pain: it could be caused by gout. With acute gout attack the uric acid may not be elevated but in the upper limits of normal. Also you only see changes in the X-Ray if it is chronic gout where there has been joint damage. Other possibility could be infection. Try changing your diet and cut down on your protein intake. The second joint on my second toe hurts so bad when it's touched.It doesnt look red or swollen but cant bend all the way.Run regularly but no trauma.

Painful toe: joggers sometimes get 'stress' fractures (though they are relatively longer bones of the foot). Get an X-ray. Other possibility includes tendinitis. If X-ray shows no fracture, try anti inflammatory medicine (600-800 mg Ibuprofen 3 times a ay with food) for a few days. If response is not satisfactory , see your physician. ...Read more

Inflammatory Rx.: There is no need to wonder if, and, or but. The toe has been traumatized and there is a potential for some serious complications. Get to the surgeons office and have it evaluated.
