Dr. Michael Engel answered:

Had recent trouble with severe anemia. Red blood cell count went down to a six. I ended up in the hospital getting transfused with three units of blood. Does sickle cell trait effect anemia?

Sickle cell trait...

Hospitalization
Will not produce the anemia that you describe. You should work with your Dr. to identify the cause and to correct it. I hope that you are feeling better after the care you received, and together with your Dr you will get to the bottom of it. Good luck to you. Keep us posted.

Dr. Scott J. Diede answered:

Can sickle cell trait affect the white blood cells?

No.

Open-uri20130405-25862-q91pol
Sickle cell trait (one copy of beta-globin gene with sickle mutation and one normal copy) will not affect white blood cells. Those with sickle cell disease (two sickle genes) can have chronically elevated white blood cell counts, caused in part by inflammation in the blood vessels.

Blood transfusions will not cause sickle trait. Sickle trait is an inherited disease. You will get it from one of your parents.
