Whipple 8/15. Severe upper left abd pain, recurrent fever (103), & acute pancreatitis in past 3 weeks. CT says multiple non dilated small bowel loops in abd & pelvis - says gastroenteritis. Other possibilities? Drs gave no answer for recurrent fever.

Fever: The intestinal loop pattern is nonspecific, in my opinion. I would be concerned about an intraabdominal abscess formation. I recommend that an abdominal surgeon be conducting your care with close collaboration of a gastroenterologist and a radiologist who can suggest other imaging studies likely to shed light on your case. An exploratory operation may be required, however if antibiotics don't help. ...Read more

Still Acute: Chronic pancreatitis would require evidence of permanent damage to the pancreas. And having acute episodes is not a feature of only chronic (though can happen if there is acute-on-chronic). You are correct that continued attacks can lead to chronic pancreatitis. High triglycerides can cause ap. An ERCP and (if that is negative) sphincter of oddi manometry may help. See a pancreas specialist! ...Read more

One third of all pancreatitis either has no known cause or is due to adverse reactions to drugs. Thanks for trusting HealthTap! ...Read more
