Rectal Thermometer Adults
Varies: If the oral temperature is take correctly, under the tongue with the mouth closed the entire time the thermometer is reading, it shouldn't be much different from rectal. Babies can't follow these instructions, so if you want' to accurately know a baby's temperature, do it rectally. All other methods are far less reliable (unless you ask someone trying to sell you something). ...Read more

I have two rectal thermometers for kids and I don't know which one is right on one it says his temp is 101 on the other 99.5 one is Vicks brand one is rell on?
9mo registered 96°F rectal temp using two thermometers. Is there something wrong? She has been acting normal but had fever yesterday.
A little low: A rectal temp of 96 in an infant is a bit on the low side. Although infections typically present with HIGH temperature, some present with a LOW one. This situation is unlikely in the face of a well appearing child, but a trip to the pediatrician for reassurance wouldn't be a bad idea. ...Read more

Was giving one of my children a rectal temp. Before i had a chance to wash it, his bro took thermometer and put it up nose. Worry about e. Coli?
It happens: Kids do crazy things sometimes. Something like this comes along that you never even though could happen in your home. Our skin/mucosal linings are there to protect us. In the event of redness in or around the nose and/or discharge, have your pediatrician take a look. Otherwise, remind him to never do that again. Take a deep breath, he'll be ok. ...Read more

Mucus w/ little red on thermometer after take 2 yo rectal.Found tiny piece glass in stool 4d ago, related? Don't know where glass from. No other blood
Get Checked: I agree with the other answer completely. It can be normal for children to eat non-food items (a behavior called pica). But eating glass can be dangerous. And as was mentioned, checking temperature indicates some other concern. Though likely nothing serious, it's best to have a pediatrician evaluate your child. ...Read more

It usily does : Cold or an upper respiratory infection are caused by viruses and frequently cause quite a few symptoms, including fever which can range from mild to very high. The good news is that the cold is a self limiting disease lasting no more than 7-10 days, for which OTC meds usually suffice. ...Read more

Doubt it: The rectum is a tube with thick walls. You can insert a tube up to 6 inches or so before it must turn a corner in a 1yo. I have never seen any 1 yo thrilled to have a rectal temp or seen one with an injury from such a procedure. ...Read more

Stick with the....: Classics. A tried and true digital thermometer that you place under the arm or tongue is the best and safest way to measure a child's temperature. These are a safe version of the old glass thermometers that can acquire temperature info from the same sites. Leave the ear thermometers to the medical professionals. They can be tricky to use and to avoid inaccurately measuring the ear canal wall temp. ...Read more
