Ankle weights: My answer is that i wouldn't do any exercise that hurts. Pain is a sign that your body doesn't like this. I would reduce the weight (to 1 pound, or even 1/2 a pound) till i found a level of weight which allowed me to do the exercise without pain. If your knees are screaming at you during the exercise or if you have prolonged (greater than an hour) soreness after exercise, you are doing too much. If it is a fracture, you would be well suited to avoid exercises that put extra strain on that area such as seated military press, etc for 6-8 weeks.
