Am I supposed to wear a knee brace during rehabilitation excersises?

Am I supposed to wear a knee brace during rehabilitation excersises?

Not necessarily: It depends on what injury you are trying to rehabilitate. The use of knee braces is controversial, with no solid evidence regarding their use. Most surgeons will use a post-op brace to protect the knee during the early post-op period, but rehabilitation exercises are designed to restore motion and strength with a low risk of injury, even without a brace.

Give way: Muscle weakness or imbalance. Try cross training with other exercises besides running such as bike, elliptical, swim, & resistance training with weights.

Further work up: You need a thorough history, physical exam and possibly some further work up - xray/mri. However, if after the history ; exam, your doc doesn't determine any significant problem or the problem becomes apparent, he may choose to prescribe treatment commensurate to the problem found.

Will I have to wear a knee brace all of the time if I have a knee arthroplasty?

No: The goal of knee replacement surgery is to create a pain free and stable knee. If the surgeon cannot restore ligamentous stability, you may need a brace. This is possible but rarely occurs.

After having acl/mcl surgery how long should I continue to wear a knee brace while engaging in physical activity?

After having acl/mcl surgery how long should I continue to wear a knee brace while engaging in physical activity?

Ask Surgeon: This is a decision your surgeon should address since every case is unique. Only your surgeon knows how extensive the damage was and what had to be done to correct it. Some will recommend at least light compression indefinitely after the surgery while sometimes it is only a few weeks or months.

Should I wear a knee brace when returning to soccer after ACL injury?

Should I wear a knee brace when returning to soccer after ACL injury?

Depends: Many sports physicians do recommend a custom acl brace when returning to soccer after acl injury. It often depends on the severity of the injury and whether or not there was any other associated injury. Many athletes find them cumbersome and when they get their confidence no longer use them.

I work in a place with a lot of stairs, I have patellar tendonitis, should I wear a knee brace? And if so what kind should I get?

I work in a place with a lot of stairs, I have patellar tendonitis, should I wear a knee brace? And if so what kind should I get?

Strengthen knee: Strengthening of quadriceps muscle would more likely solve the problem. Brace may work, but would be required from then on, as allows muscles to become even weaker and worsen instability.

I have to wear a knee brace for instability of the knee after having mendisic surgery last july I am in constant pain what about knee replacement?

I have to wear a knee brace for instability of the knee after having mendisic surgery last july I am in constant pain what about knee replacement?

Very last option: Knee replacement is your very last option - try everything you can to avoid it as long as you can. That's advice form a doctor who is currently recovering from her second knee replacement at just age 53 after my knee was destroyed and reconstructed at age 19 after being hit by a drunk driver. Knee replacement does not mean pain free. If your knee is stable, seek other options for pain relief first.

I had knee surgery about a year ago and since then I have had to wear a knee brace every day my knee hurts all the time and my calf stays swollen up?

I had knee surgery about a year ago and since then I have had to wear a knee brace every day my knee hurts all the time and my calf stays swollen up?

See details.: This is obviously not a normal result from what I assume to be arthroscopic surgery. You should not still need a brace and should not be in pain. Calf swelling can be secondary to phlebitis or the rupture of a popliteal cyst among other causes. Get a 2nd opinion. I would strongly recommend a new MRI if you have not recently had one done.

See details: What surgery was done? That info would help me to provide a more specific answer. Something is obviously wrong. Get the knee reevaluated and do not be afraid to get a 2nd opinion.

Second opinion: Perhaps you need a different type of knee brace. You may need to change your activity while you are wearing a brace. Physical therapy may be beneficial to strengthen the muscles around your knee. Discuss your dissatisfaction with the results of the brace with your doctor and explore other treatment options, or consider getting a second opinion from an orthopedist or sports medicine doctor.

Knee brace: I would try soft elastic knee brace that you can slide over on your knees. As well as the same type of ankle brace. But if condition continues, I would have the areas exam.

I had a meniscus repair one yr ago wear a knee brace for instability had physical therapy 3 times constant pain what about knee replacement?

I had a meniscus repair one yr ago wear a knee brace for instability had physical therapy 3 times constant pain what about knee replacement?

Unlikely: Knee replacement is done to treat arthritis of the knee. If you are 33 years old, it is unlikely that you have severe arthritis in your knee unless you had a major trauma in the past or have had multiple surgeries. Knee arthritis is easily diagnosed with a plain x-ray. This is where you should begin to see if you have evidence of arthritis.
