What causes a enlarged spleen?

What causes a enlarged spleen?

Many causes : The spleen's job is to take older or damaged blood cells out of circulation. Diseases that cause abnormal or disrupted cells, like thallesemias and hemolytic anemia cause enlargement to compensate for the increased work. What could cause an atrophic spleen and enlarged thymus?

What could cause an atrophic spleen and enlarged thymus?

Many, maybe related: Spleen can be small either because it never grew (as baby/child) or because it was injured and became scarred. If problem started young enough, thymus can take over some of the spleen's work to compensate (so becomes bigger). Spleen filters old/damaged blood cells and helps produce new ones, filters out certain infections and has other immune functions; thymus is an important part of immune system. ...Read more

Abd/pelvis CT today. Why is my Dr not concerned about mild splenomegaly, or several mildly enlarged lymph nodes. Had test for fever unknown origin.

Nodes not signif.: One has to know why the scan was done. Were there nodes in external chains that needed clarification. When nodes continue to enlarge in face of mild splenomegaly then superficial node that is most enlarged should be biopsied. Low grade chronic lymphoma can persist in a vegetative state for a long period and firm if not very enlarged might still be an indication for bx. ...Read more

Chances lymphoma with no noticeable enlarged lymph nodes? CBC, CMP normal. CT normal- mildly enlarged spleen 13cm

Chances lymphoma with no noticeable enlarged lymph nodes? CBC, CMP normal. CT normal- mildly enlarged spleen 13cm

Very Low chance: It is reassuring that there aren't any enlarged lymph nodes, and you have a normalCBC. If there is a lymphoma, it is a very hard to detect one. And it is not causing any problems to the body. I would leave it alone. Get a check up maybe in 6 months- just labs, ldh and a physical exam or ultrasound for the spleen. Spleen sizes also vary quite a lot, but good to keep an eye on it. ...Read more
