Muscular Pain?: Hi, your recent onset of symptoms and your age suggest that at this point the most likely diagnosis is that you have a shoulder/upper back/neck strain. You don't describe radicular symptoms that would suggest a neurologic etiology. Initial treatment after an H&P and imaging usually starts with NSAIDs and maybe a muscle relaxer and also some therapy exercises to see if your symptoms will get better ...Read more

Arguably: Arguably the worst possible cause of severe pain felt in the shoulder blade and deep into the chest would be an uncommon condition called aortic dissection. Problems with the gallbladder and heart can also cause pain in the region of the shoulder or armpit (axilla). The spinal nerve corresponding to t2 also feels an area that involves the armpits and hoop-shaped strip of skin that runs across your chest above your nipples, through your armpits, and across your back at about the same level (it also involves part of the skin on the arm). After excluding things like dissection, heart problems, and gallbladder problems, a neurosurgeon may be helpful to get to a diagnosis and some relief. ...Read more

Why do I cough and then feel a sharp pain in my armpit across my back to under my shoulder blade?

Why do I cough and then feel a sharp pain in my armpit across my back to under my shoulder blade?

Could be diaphragm: When you cough, it increases your intrathoracic and intra-abdominal pressure. If you do not have enough fluid between your lung tissue and your diaphragm, coughing and even deep breathing can cause pain. Your medical doctor can hear if this is happening using a stethescope. Another reason for your pain could be a pinched nerve in your thoracic spine. Sometimes an MRI is necessary to diagnose this. ...Read more
