Depends: Every ENT doctor has a different answer. Some let people eat real food right away. I tell my patients to avoid foods and drinks that are hot, hard, spicy or acidic for 2 weeks. I like my patients to stay away from anything that can scratch, burn or irritate their throats while healing. Same as kids: If you've had your tonsils completely out, you have a raw surface in your mouth. We tell people to eat a soft diet with minimal chewing so that there is less risk of encouraging bleeding from the raw muscle in the back of the throat. Any time you want: I tend to not restrict diet in any way. Some ents say to stick to a soft diet but that is more of an older way of thinking. If there was something more difficult with your surgery your doctor may give you specific instructions on what not to eat- obviously follow that. Be sure to stay hydrated. I am due a Tonsillectomy soon what's the best after care advice , i.e only eat certain foods, reducing swelling,reducing infection etc?
Cold liquids at 1st: Expect to use your pain medication - it helps. Ice cold liquids at 1st - slowly add ice cold Ensure. After about a week the cold may hurt the new tissue, so tepid clear broth, etc. No acidic, spicy or textured for awhile. Antisceptic gargle and saline gargle. be patient. 8-10 days.: The critical period for healing after a tonsillectomy in the toddler age group is about 8-10 days. I believe solid food in very small pieces can be eaten at any time. But popsicles, milkshakes, custard, jello, gator aid are my recommendations for the first 10 days.
