Rash Runs Will Eat
Friend's 3yo has down syndrome. Doesn't eat most foods, only pasta. Will he outgrow this? Would therapy help him gain better control of his tongue?
Yes: Occupational therapists as well as speech therapists can help children with textural issues and oral-motor control problems. Both therapists should be involved with children with down syndrome starting in early infancy. A nutritionist with experience in pediatrics would be highly recommended in this particular child in addition to the others to help mom plan a balanced diet. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

See an allergist: From your brief description, you may urticarial (hives). There are many allergic and nonallergic triggers for urticaria. I would recommend seeking help from a board-certified allergist/immunologist as this typically falls into their field. After confirming the diagnosis of urticaria, he/she can assist you in determining the trigger and more appropriately treat you. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
GOOD GOAL >15 weeks: Many studies show that a reasonable rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. So @ that rate 30# loss should take approx. 15+ weeks. You may have to look closely at calorie intake and 'not just stop red meat'. Perhaps a 1300-1500 kcal/day 'meal plan' will net you the weight loss you desire. It is a great idea to 'walk 2 miles a day'. Good job! ...Read more
Shingles: Three to four days after the prodomal stage, the shingles rash erupts. Usually, it will be on only one side of the body. The rash is comprised of many tiny watery blisters that are more painful that they are itchy; the nerve roots that the varicella virus transverses often cause a sharp, pinlike sensation merely on palpation of the rash. The blisters scab in about 5-7 days. ...Read more
I been having gas from fiber bars , green apples and bananas and whole grain bread .will the gas eventually go away if I keep on diet and toughen it ?
Don't think so: People who eat lots of fiber tend to have lots of gas, as the undigested fiber is a picnic for billions of bowel bacteria. There are reportedly more billions of bacteria inside our bowels than the number of cells we have making up our own bodies. The bacteria will likely keep eating and keep making gas, as long as the "food" keeps coming down the pipe. One can try weaning down the fiber. ...Read more
Hypothetically, you eat 3500 over BMR on Sun, go into a coma Monday, TPN at BMR 1 month. How long for that 3500 to appear as a pound of fat, typically?
Probably never: It's a good question with no good answer. Fortunately our bodies are not calculators and a one time indulgence even well over what's needed would probably not change anything except glycogen stores with a small weight gain initially. Habitual overeating causes weight gain over time and it is rarely 100% fat gain. Our metabolism constantly adjusts to try and maintain so there isn't one answer. ...Read more

Child can drink anything without vomiting but can only eat a few bites of food and be full if eats more will throw up going on 4 days any ideas?
Kid vomiting: Inability to keep down just solids makes me think of some type of gastric outlet obstruction - this means things not emptying out of stomach into intestine properly. This is quite unusual in this age group. Could be something as simple as irritation in stomach from a virus to more serious things such as lymph nodes or tumor blocking the outlet. If not better by 7 days, needs peds GI eval and study. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Will not eat regular food. Relys on cups of milk to keep full. And when he does eat regular food it comes out in diarrhea with undigested food (whole)?
Good problems: The first thing to do is to see how your child has been growing. There are standard growth charts to check his growth over time. Does he have a regular doc that you bring him to. Is he concerned? The reasons for a kid to "fail to thrive" are myriad and if he is falling off his growth curves it demands a thorough work up. By the way, milk is a great food. Take him to Phoenix which has a great Chil ...Read more
Any tips on getting older people with alzheimer's to eat? We provide plenty of his favorites but he will only eat a few bites.
We age every day: Grilling bacon for a whole year will age one's skin a whole year. Whether or not one's skin will look MORE than a year older in that time is anyone's guess. The toxins in vaporized food and smoke have a small effect compared to smoking tobacco or other substances. Hopefully, the grill's exhaust vent powerfully sucks the toxins away. For most people, sunshine damages skin more than grilling will. ...Read more
