Rash On Arm After Blood Draw
Common: The vein that is punctured for the test will often clot and form a lump of sorts.-- especially if the phlebotomist missed vein or went thru it with the needle. This is a superficial vein, usually not serious and responds to heat and rest. If there is redness or persistent pain, see and md. Not all clots are serious but, when in doubt, of course please please see an md feel better. ...Read more
A clot of 1 cm diameter appeared in about forty minutes after the blood draw in inner part of my arm near elbow, Should I be worried? Thank you
Probably not a great: Deal yet this reflects poor phlebotomy technique (e.g double wall puncture, etc.) combined with not holding pressure (with a single finger tip) on the location (s) of the vein (s) puncture after the blood sample was collected. This, & possible damage to the vein (s), at that location allowed continued bleeding from the punctured vein such that accumulated blood became visible through the skin. ...Read more
Felt extr pain during blood draw yday in left arm & asked to stop. Still hurts in that spot and nerve clicks when I lift the arm. Will this heal? Thanks.
Normal: Some of the blood drawn during the needle stick leaked inside your skin, its ok and it happens, unless there is a hard lump or extreme pain then you should be ok, it will disappear just like any other bruise. ...Read more
Yesterday I had blood draw from my arm and today, I scratch it and now a knot came up as a size of a dime, is this normal and should I be concerned?
Not unusual: The knot is from bleeding under the skin after needle was removed. It's called a hematoma. It will resolve in a week or two just like a bruise would. No cause for alarm. Thanks for trusting HealthTap! ...Read more
Tingling in left forearm down to fingers after blood draw 2 days ago. Shock-like pain at poke site each time I flex arm. What's wrong? How to recover? Thx.
Hematoma: It seems you developed a hematoma, or localized bleeding under the skin at the site of your blood draw. This should resolve on its own. The hematoma seems to be pressing on a nerve when you move or flex your arm. If it persists, you may need to be evaluated. Give it a few days ...Read more
Nerve Pain at blood draw site upon flexing arm. Though doesn't restrict movement, it makes me hesitant/careful to move it. Is it arm weakness? Thanks.
Continue to monitor: Pain is not the same thing as weakness, but pain could lead to weakness. Continue to monitor the symptoms, and if they worsen (skin discoloration, true weakness, worsening pain) or persist, see your primary care physician. Http://www. Nlm. Nih. Expert advice for blood draws. I fear the alcohol bottle before blood draw thinking it may have HIV fluids other than blood on it because they are transparent. How long should I wait (minutes) for the liquid on my arm to dry before blood draw?
Easy does it, Joe: Listen buddy. You're right to be concerned about HIV, but the chance of there being HIV in somebody's alcohol bottle (which would kill it) is zero. If you allow yourself to indulge in this kind of thinking, you'll be paralyzed with fear of everything in daily life. You simply cannot afford this. To be brave, act brave. Never limit yourself because of fears you know are unrealistic. Best wishes. ...Read more
Is pain on the inner right side of forearm and outer side of upper arm expected after nerve hit from blood draw 7 days ago at forearm of left hand?
I had a blood draw a couple hours ago. I have arm pain and stiffness, is that typical? Is naseau, dizziness also common or would that just be anxiety?
Week ago I did blood draw and I felt pain from pinch down to my hand. After few days little bruise appeared. It still hurt when I straight arm. Why?
Likely harmless: What you describe is a "blown" vein. When your blood was drawn, the tech likely obtained the specimen then on withdrawal the vein ruptured which isn't as bad as it sounds. Veins often have associated nerves that travel with them. The bruising also makes this more likely. Apply heat a few times per day and it should go away. ...Read more
Nerve Pain at blood draw site upon flexing arm. Almost constant mild nerve pain from inner forearm to lower palm. What to expect? How to promote healing?
Nerve pain?: Sometimes there can be nerve pain at a blood draw site. It normally heals after 1-2 weeks, sometimes a little longer. It may help to prevent trauma to this area, treat with a warm compress (wash cloth, warm water bottle) a couple times per day, and avoid blood draws to that site until it feels better. ...Read more

Have a history of blood clots in arm, leg, and pulmonary embolism. Last night I had a blood draw, today huge hematoma that is painful. Possible clot?
No: A hematoma occurs when blood leaks out of the blood vessel that was punctured. There is a pool of blood in the adjacent tissues and, since blood is irritating, it hurts. Because of your hx, I'm guessing you might be on an anticoagulant ("blood thinner")? If so, it predisposes you to a hematoma. Hematomas hurt but get better on their own. There's no risk of the clot "traveling" anywhere. ...Read more
Blood draw 5 days ago. Swelling and awfully painful on inner elbow. No brusing showing. What should I do and how long will it hurt?
How long for nerve pain at blood draw site, i.e forearm, that extends to palm, little, ring fingers to resolve? 7 days since the draw. Signs to watch for?
It should resolve: Quickly. If not see your doctor for evaluation. It's unlikely that a nerve was injected or pinched, but there could be swelling from the blood draw if it leaked into the tissue causing inflammation around the nerve. So, you may benefit from applying warm compress around the site, and seeing if that helps or not. Using anti-inflammatory OTC meds. If it's numb, tingling, painful, please see your Dr! ...Read more

I had a routine blood draw at my OB/GYN office last Tuesday. Once the needle went in I immediately felt as shooting pain in my forearm up to the base of my hand. I continue to feel tingling in the palm of my hand and something akin to electric pricking in
Nerve pricked: The needle probably pricked a nerve when it was inserted, causing the shooting pain in your forearm. The continued tingling in your palm is due to injury to the nerve. Peripheral nerves heal slowly but it should eventually heal completely and the tingling will stop. This is something that could not have been avoided, it is a risk anytime blood is drawn. Don't worry, it will resolve. ...Read more
Had blood drawn a week ago which really hurt. Now I have some sorta muscle pain or cramps and a rash came out on my forearm. I'm scared its thrombosis?
Depends: Injury of any tissue can hurt for some time. A little black and blue is also possible. If it has swollen up, red, warm, fever- it could be sign of inflammation or infection around the area. Small superficial thrombophlebitis is local inflammation, gets better with warm pads elevation - are not as serious as deep vein thrombosis. If it does not better, might be a good idea to see your doctor. ...Read more

I got a pretty bad gash on my arm and when I was washing away the blood I noticed a small almost allergic rash following the trail of blood?
No Known skin diseas:
In 41 years of dermatology practice, I have never heard this complaint. There should be no allergic reactions to your own blood in any way shape or form. It would be nice to see a picture of this rash, And it would be hard to say what might've cause the coloration, But some people actually scrubbed the area around the wound and it will cause some temporary redness which looks like a rash ...Read more
