I'm taking hydrocodone and morphine for pain. Im tolerant of the former and the morphine causes a strong histamine reaction. What else can I try?
More than likely: yes. All opioids have the potential to release histamine from mast cells, which is what causes hives. The ones that do it most are morphine, codeine and hydrocodone, and the ones that do it the least are oxycodone, heroin and fentanyl. Levorphanol is metabolized into morphine and codeine, and if you have had problems before with these meds, very likely you will with levorphanol. ...Read more

No much OTC meds: If you have real food allergy and you break out in hives when you eat that particular food, beside benadryl, (diphenhydramine) there are not much otc meds you can take. Go to the nearest er if you have nausea, vomiting or difficulty breathing since those are signs of anaphylaxis and can be dangerous. Pain: Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) should only be used for short term pain relief. I would say 4 to 5 days max. How long have you had this pain? Was it an MD or DDS that looked at the sore and gave you the Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen)? Yes: Opiates are known to be able to induce or aggravate hives for some people. Nsaid allergy is usually specific for that one and not to all others. Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Benadryl allergies are rare if ever present. Since you have chronic urticaria, i suspect that many of the reactions you have described might have been incidental and not related. You need to consult an allergist. ...Read more
It could: All opiates cause release of histamine, and morphine, Codeine and Demerol have the most, and oxycodone, Methadone and fentanyl do it the least. However, they all can cause some histamine release, and some people get major problems with all of them. Levorphanol also can do this. You could take a Benadryl with it - talk to your doctor.
