Rare Abn Under Bacteria And Mucus On Blood Test
My 2 yr. Son started limping. We read this could be quite serious. The dr. Ran a blood test but came back neg. For bacteria, this am he will not walk?
Other Sx: Many toddlers will jump off a something and push their hip bone into the socket. Hours later they will limp or not walk because of fluid building up in the hip joint. If your doc examined the kid, & CBC showed no sign of infection, you may want to monitor this at home for a day or so. Traumatic synovitis peaks and fades over a 1-3 days but these kids are comfortable at rest. Re check as needed. ...Read more

What blood test would reveal small bacteria overgrowh in the intestines? What are the symptoms and causes?
Folate (folic acid): Agree with dr. Larsh. Bacterial overgrowth can also cause abnormally high serum folate (folic acid) levels in the absence of supplement use, along with low vitamin B12 levels. Bacterial fermentation increases the folate (folic acid), and they compete for the b12. Bacterial overgrowth can be confirmed with breath hydrogen testing after lactulose (poorly digestible carbohydrate) load. ...Read more

I ate food that was recalled due to listeria. How soon would the bacteria show up on a blood test? Possibly pregnant.
Listeria outbreak: It is quite unlikely for Listeria to show up in the blood. Most commonly a "GI illness" is what occurs - such as nausea/vomiting or diarrhea. For those who's immune system is weak - including older age, cancer, HIV/AIDs, or even pregnancy - then it's important to check professionally with a doctor for any fevers or other signs of serious illness. Listeria, when it attacks, is a serious illness. ...Read more
No: A CBC or complete blood count checks white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelet counts. There is a serologic test for h pylori which can be used to screen for infection, but can not be used after treatment as it can remain positive. I know of no blood test that would in any way assist in diagnosing the cause of your symptoms. A blood test is not how these problems are assessed.

A heady subject...: Have they tried some medications? Usually, if something can't be found on those tests, then they may try a few medications and gauge the response. Had an agressive viral pneumonia 5 weeks back, no fever since 2 weeks, still coughing, have a sore throat and one lymph node swelled at the neck. 2 days ago took blood test no bacteria and lung X-ray clean. Should I do more tests or just let it pass?
Blood isn't best: What is best to diagnose would be a sputum culture and respiratory viral panel if you wanted to isolate the causative agent. A good physical exam and history should be able take care of you in most situations though and help to make sure you don't have pneumonia. Bacteria in the blood is a sign of a more serious infection. ...Read more

For 3days friend has nausea vomiting diarrhea. Got IV at ER today-blood test shows gastroenteritis. Does viral show up in blood test? Or just bacterial?
Well, the ER doctor: May have looked a clinical symptoms, history & examination in combination with a Complete blood count with differential (CBC with Diff). The CBC does not make a hard diagnosis but can be suggestive. For instance ^ lymphocytes might suggest a viral infection & ^ neutrophils might suggest a bacterial infection. A culture which was positive for a bacterial pathogen would be strong evidence ...Read more

I had a blood test done, what does it mean? Kappa monoclonal gammopathy. Is this rare? Does this mean cancer? Is this anything to worry about?
Not necessarily: You don't tell me why the test was done in the first place. Kappa chain is one of 2 light protein chains that are part molecule of an immunoglobulin. In your case, it is half of an igg. Even if you are asymptomatic, you may develop a problem over 20 years. If you have symptoms, you need further evaluation.
