Rapid Strep Test Vs Throat Culture
I have white spots on the sides of my throat & back of my tongue. I had a rapid strep test done 3 days ago that came back neg. What could this be?
Any pain/discomfort.: You don't say if you're having pain or discomfort from this. If you're having pain then this could be another type of infection, including thrush. If it's not painful, it could simply be a coated tongue that needs cleaning. Consult your dentist or an ENT to resolve the issue. ...Read more
This is usually done when a throat infection is suspected. One will take a swab of the throat and then place the swab in culture medium. This will then be grown on a culture plate to determine if/what type of bacteria is causing the infection. Both viruses and bacteria ...Read more

Not 100%: The strept tests (including the rapid testing) are not 100% accurate, so if your symptoms persist, or get worse, let your dr. Know. Best wishes. ...Read more
If the rapid strep test is done on the second day of sore throat in a 12 year old are the results accurate or should wait more days?
Can be: Any of these tests can be falsely negative at any point, but they can be positive as soon as there are living strep germs present in the throat. Many practitioners will do a backup culture any time the quick test is negative to be sure not to miss a case. You have ~ 10 days from the first symptoms to treat & prevent rheumatic fever. ...Read more
My 11yo recd neg rapid strep test yesterday. Her throat hurts so bad she can barely swallow. She is very congested. Can virus cause bad sore throat?
Yes, viruses can: Definitely cause very painful sore throats. Did her doctor also do an "overnight" culture in their office or sent out to a lab? Does she have fever? Is she drinking fluids? If she's not drinking well and it continues, I would recommend calling the doctor again and possibly getting her re-checked. ...Read more
29/f. Sore throat for 3 days, no congestion, low grade fever, negative rapid strep test. Should I be concerned about mono? When should I get tested?
Not necessarily: While mono is one of many viral causes of soar throats, I would not be overly concerned about not testing. The luck among us get it in childhood when it acts like most other "bugs" & fades quickly. If so you are immune. Adults tend to suffer major symptoms & may be bedbound for a few weeks. The inflamed tonsils of mono are some of the nastiest I have ever seen. If your not that sick, just take it easy ...Read more

Negative for rapid strep test today. Signs of strep are apparent. Mainly a stuffy nose, fever, and sore white throat, not super tired. Mono or strep?
Probably strep: Sounds more like strep, rapid strep cultures are only 70% accurate and separate longer test is much advisable along with the rapid, strep patients also sometimes state having the feeling of a golf ball inthere throat which is usually a hallmark sign for the condition, mono patients are usually excessively tired and have swollen cervical lymph nodes or it could very well just be a bad virus. ...Read more

Is it common to test positive for strep a on rapid strep and a month later test positive for strep c on throat culture?
Not unusual: Group C strep is frequently found on throat culture and is part of the normal flora that reside in the throat. As such, it's role as the causative agent in any given case of pharyngitis is often uncertain. There is no evidence Group C strep causes Acute Rheumatic Fever. *If it is cultured in an asymptomatic individual there is no necessity to treat it unless it's suspected as the cause. ...Read more

Allergy related: Probably this is "cobblestoning, " which is the finding of streaks of lymphoid tissue on the posterior pharynx (back of the throat). It's caused by chronic allergy type symptoms. A doctor should be able to confirm that with a look in the back of the throat. If your allergies are bad, there are various treatments that may help, such as antihistamines or even immunotherapy. Not one I would use: This class of drugs have a broad range of effects against many types of germs but I find no listing for strep throat. It is not used in kids and rarely used in most simple infections. Since strep is universally sensitive to the penicillins, and other inexpensive medications, it is one I would never use for strep throat. ...Read more
Took a throat culture today and said I either have strep throat or mono. How will I know which one I have?
One or Other or Both: You can't have either a strep throat or mononucleosis. You can have one or the other or both. A rapid strep test or a throat culture will tell whether or not you have a strep throat. A mono spot test or ebv antibody panel will show whether or not you have mono. If you have both do not take Ampicillin or Amoxicillin because either will cause a rash 90% of the time. ...Read more

After having a sore throat for over a week, is it too late to have a throat culture done for strep throat? My two grandsons have strep throat?
No: You can have a quick test done in the office with relatively accurate results almost immediately. A culture can also be done as backup. If not you run these risks and can be a continuous carrier of the germ. ...Read more

I saw a doctor yesterday and was diagnosed with pharyngitis. Still waiting for strep throat culture to come back. Pain is worst. Can hardly swallow.?
Can be other things.: Strep is not the only cause of pharyngitis. Herpes simplex, chlamydia, ebv, corynebacterium diptheriae, and many others can also cause it. That is one reason why the strep check swab is done, as well as a strep culture. Your doctor should be able to do this/should have done this rapid check so you can start treatment if positive. My throat was swollen. Doc did a throat culture and it is strep throat c.Left toncel still soreaalong with left side of my tounge and left ear. Normal?
Yes: Strep infections can infect all the moist tissues in the nose and pharynx (throat). Pain and swelling are cardinal signs of inflammation. The bacterial infection can extend to the eustachian tube that connects the inner ear to the back of the throat--swelling closes the tube and causes earache. See your doc for antibiotics. Use: neilmed sinus rinse, salt water gargle and Ibuprofen 600 mg 4 x a day. ...Read more

Sore, red throat, hurts to swallow. My doc said it's not strep based on throat culture. I saw him 2x. It's day 12 & there's no improvement.?
Sore throat: Throat cultures are a good way to diagnose strep throat, but sometimes they can be falsely negative. It is very likely that your infection is viral, in which case you could have symptoms for 2 weeks or more. You can use symptomatic treatment such as sprays and lozenges. Warm tea with honey can help. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin for pain. Seek medical care if you develop fever or difficulty breathing. ...Read more
She had amoxicilin, cefdinir, augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate). Then rapid strep positive but throat culture negative. Symptoms are not clearcut. Should we continue clindamycin?
Questionable?: The fact that the culture, which is the gold standard for diagnosis of strep throat, is negative, tells me the infection is resolved, at least most of it. I cannot instruct you to stop the antibiotic since there are many details I would need to know. However, the fact that there are still symptoms after 4 antibiotics makes me question if this is really strep infection. Follow up with her doctor. ...Read more
