Rapid Strep Test Vs Throat Culture
This is usually done when a throat infection is suspected. One will take a swab of the throat and then place the swab in culture medium. This will then be grown on a culture plate to determine if/what type of bacteria is causing the infection. Both viruses and bacteria ...Read more
Is it common to test positive for strep a on rapid strep and a month later test positive for strep c on throat culture?
Not unusual: Group C strep is frequently found on throat culture and is part of the normal flora that reside in the throat. As such, it's role as the causative agent in any given case of pharyngitis is often uncertain. There is no evidence Group C strep causes Acute Rheumatic Fever. *If it is cultured in an asymptomatic individual there is no necessity to treat it unless it's suspected as the cause. ...Read more

Allergy related: Probably this is "cobblestoning," which is the finding of streaks of lymphoid tissue on the posterior pharynx (back of the throat). It's caused by chronic allergy type symptoms. A doctor should be able to confirm that with a look in the back of the throat. If your allergies are bad, there are various treatments that may help, such as antihistamines or even immunotherapy. Try an allergist if needed ...Read more
The germ: Some group A strep germs carry an extra piece of genetic code that triggers a toxin that can cause the rash. If someone has a strep infection in their throat it usually shows up within 12 hrs of the first fever. If the infection is treated very early, it may not show up at all. A strep germ without the extra gene will not trigger the rash. Scarlet fever is an old term used back before penicillin. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Not one I would use: This class of drugs have a broad range of effects against many types of germs but i find no listing for strep throat..It is not used in kids and rarely used in most simple infections. Since strep is universally sensitive to the penicillins, and other inexpensive medications, it is one i would never use for strep throat. ...Read more
Confusing question: I suppose the question is about missing a throat infection with gonorrhea or chlamydia. The positive strep test does indicate that strep is present. If you did not tell the doc you might have been exposed to these germs through oral contact, the specialized testing would not have been done to see if they were also present. The simple strep test does not look for the additional agents. ...Read more
Rapid strep neg but pedi treating because throat looks very suspicious of strep, but she has no throat pain just high fever. Virus or strep?
Hard to know: The strep test is generally predictive, but false negative is possible. Is another swab test necessary after finishing antibiotics course in toddlers for strep throat to make sure strep is gone?
I never do it: Toddlers can carry strep around and never get sick from it, so presence in their throat is not definite sign of disease. The penicillin drugs used to treat strep kill it, and stop the body from creating the antibodies that trigger rheumatic fever. If a toddler comes in with fever & a raw throat I will treat a positive strep, but do not test again unless the kid comes back sick again. ...Read more
Throat culture: To diagnose acute infection with streptococcus you need throat culture, if the rapid step test is negative. Positive test result on either should be treated as infection. Sore throat/slightly blocked nose/headache. Throat culture says: Streptoccus viridans (moderate growth), no pathogenic organisms found. what to do?
No, but...: Group a strep, the bacteria that causes 'strep throat' is still universally sensitive to pcn. However, other bacteria can cause pharyngitis and acute tonsillitis, as well as many viruses. If you are not getting better, would get back with doc and see if you need a full culture or evaluation for other causes such as mono(caused by ebv virus and can sometimes give false positive result strep test). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
She had amoxicilin, cefdinir, augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate). Then rapid strep positive but throat culture negative.Symptoms are not clearcut. Should we continue clindamycin?
Questionable?: The fact that the culture, which is the gold standard for diagnosis of strep throat, is negative, tells me the infection is resolved, at least most of it . I cannot instruct you to stop the antibiotic since there are many details I would need to know. However, the fact that there are still symptoms after 4 antibiotics makes me question if this is really strep infection. Follow up with her doctor. ...Read more
