Doctor insights on:
Unlikely: Rabies virus is transmitted in the saliva of the infected animal. It is unlikely that one would get rabies from a rabid raccoon scratch, unless the raccoon just licked his paws prior to scratching the person. Because rabies is a fatal disease, scratch victims should be evaluated by their doctors, and may end up getting vaccines just to be extra safe. ...Read more

What are the chances of someone getting rabies from getting scratched(broke skin) by a metal piece that was possibly wet on the ground in my house?
If I got lightly scratched by an unvaccinated cat a month ago and the cat is still living with no signs of rabies is it posdible that I got rabies from the scratch?
Unlikely: If the cat is well 1 month after your injury then no. We generally watch questionable animals for 10 days. All the best. ...Read more
I got scratched by a car it's been like a month and so and it's a stray cat do you think I got rabies or cat scratch fever?
Locate the cat: Cats, dogs and ferrets are the 3 animals that we know we can monitor them for 10 days — and if they are 'fine' after a bite or a scratch, then you won't get rabies. The problem is, cats CAN be instrumental in propagating disease — so I would take this seriously. About 1 in 1000 rabies cases is from a scratch, so the odds are low — but I would still see a doc about this for more info. ...Read more
Cat scratches: Cat and other animal scratches are capable of transmitting rabies in very rare circumstances. It is wise to observe the animal for 10 days after the scratching or biting incident. Fortunately rabies is quite rare in the US, so it depends on where this occurred and how. Definitely you should talk more with a doctor about this. Luckily with rabies there is time for action — so please see an MD. ...Read more

Cat diseases: If this was a feral or 'wild' cat, you definitely need an evaluation for rabies. In the Philippines, most rabies cases are caused by dogs, but cats can also be responsible. Usually biting is the best means of transmission, but 1 in 1000 rabies cases are from a scratch. Good you cleaned out the wound, but I recommend getting follow up care with an MD. Cat overdue for rabies vaccine. Outdoor cat, scratches puppy sometimes. If puppy bites me when playing, should I be concerned? Vaccinate cat and self?
See below: So rabies is transmitted through saliva, not a scratch. However, it would be very wise of you to get both the cat and puppy (when old enough according to the vet) vaccinated for rabies and maintain that vaccine as recommended (rabies is devastating to them too). The puppy nipping at you is not likely to give you rabies. You don't need to be vaccinated unless your bit by an unknown animal. ...Read more
I was scratched fairly deep on my left hand by a wild cat in China. I read about one case of rabies from a cat scratch here. Do I need a rabies shot? I had prophylactic rabies shots 9 years ago, and washed the scratch in iodine several times.
Nonbite exposures: i.e. scratches from a (wild) cat would rarely cause rabies. It is almost always transmitted by a bite. But it has been reported. I don't know what the timing is now since your exposure (scratch) but you should be seen and have your exposure and wound evaluated. Prior immunization is your greatest protection. Good wishes:) ...Read more
Rabies in cats: Hi. Almost any mammal can be infected with, and transmit, rabies. Rabies is transmitted in saliva. However, cats lick their paws, so it may be possible to get rabies from the scratch of an infected cat. Is the cat behaving differently? Salivating a lot? Avoiding water? I suggest you take your cat to a vet if the answer to those questions is yes. And get the cat rabies vaccinated if it's not rabid. ...Read more

I'm terribly afraid of rabies. My dog went after something coming out of the wall and hours later scratched me. Up to date on shots. 2 months ago.
Probably no worries: The typical incubation period for rabies is 3-8 weeks and you're at the end of the typical period apparently with no symptoms. Sometimes the incubation period can run out many months, but that is atypical relatively rare. Also, you were not directly bitten. The more traumatic & bloody the infection event, the more likely rabies will be contracted. Relax but monitor for fever, headache, nausea. ...Read more
My cat was fighting with an unidentified animal under my deck. 10 min later I picked her up and she scratched me. Do I have to worry about rabies?
Rabies: Hopefully your cat was vaccinated. If not, and you do not know what the animal they were fighting was, have the cat observed and checked by a veterinarian. Scratching is a very improbable means by which to transmit rabies, but since this is an almost invariably fatal illness, would take this very seriously. ...Read more
If one is bitten or scratched by a cat and takes rabies shots after one month, will it be as effective as it would have been if taken within 7 days?
Rabies shots protect: The good news is you will be protected since you did not YET have symptoms of rabies. Of course getting seen and treated is usually better, but since you did not develop rabies, there was still time... rabies has a VARIABLE incubation time- which is some cases is quite long (months). You don't want to be an unlucky case that could be a week or 2. I believe you 'made it though' and you will be fine ...Read more

Probably not...: While rabies is certainly transmissible from cats to humans, it generally requires an ill cat bite not scratch. The infected saliva of an infected animal transmits the rabies virus through injured skin, thereby inoculatin the victim. Incubation of rabies in a human after exposure is 1-3 months typically. I would be much more concerned about the possibility of cat scratch disease. ...Read more
