I am just starting Qysmia and when I started it I was on my period. My period last 7 days and I have been spotting for 4 days. Is this normal?
Breakthrough bleed: Breakthrough bleeding (bleeding at the wrong time) is very common on birth control. It happens in about 1/3 of users. Its no big deal and usually self corrects over time. If you are not satisfied or it continues to happen then consider using a different birth control method. It is a common side effect and does not mean something is wrong or that the pill is not working. ...Read more
What % of people taking qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) lost >15 pounds in the first 3 months? What was the overall average pounds lost by each person on the qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) study?
Complicated answer: There were 3 trials involving Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) and depending on how the authors analyzed the data, the degree of weight loss was different. In the equip study, one analysis showed a 5% weight loss at 52 weeks on the lower dose of qsymia (phentermine and topiramate). But this was in severely obese people (bmi>35) so the effects may not be applicable to lower bmi people. Talk with your doc about risks/benefits, and if right for you. ...Read more
Avoid grapefruit: Grapefruit and some other citrous fruits (tangelos & Seville oranges) contain chemicals that inhibit certain enzymes that help your body clear certain medications including one of the two active components of Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate), (phentermine and topiramate) namely topiramate. Grapefruit may thus increase the levels of topiramate in your body and its risks. It is best to avoid eating/drinking grapefruit and its juice while taking Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate). ...Read more

I would like to get a prescription for Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) on line. Is that possible?
Think long-term.: Short term risks and potential for abuse aside, the biggest flaw that I see with weight loss medications like this is the return of overweight once the pill is stopped. You really can't take these pills forever, and once stopped weight gain usually occurs, sometimes to or beyond your original weight. Again, quick fixes tend not to work in the long term. Be sensible and patient. ...Read more

How should qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) be prescribed? My husband is 30 pounds over weight and our doctor wrote a perscription for the highest dosage. This seems incorrect
Usually titrated up: Hi. Usually the dose of Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) is titrated up, but I suppose if he tolerates the highest dose right off the bat and has a clinical response, it's OK. Talk with the doctor or speak with your pharmacist. Maybe the doc has had favorable experience starting right off at the highest dose. ...Read more
My dr. Recommends qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) for my weight loss but my insurance dosent covers it. Is there other weight loss meds fda approve to use? Thanks.
Healthy 50 y/o female.,30mg of Paxil almost a year/menopause "madness" I call it. Gained 50lbs 9 months Dr won't prescribe qsymia (phentermine and topiramate). Why not? .
Risk vs benefit: No such thing as free lunch. Likewise, no medication (or even dietary supplement or herb) is w/o potential side effect(s). Decision to prescribe any drug is based upon whether desired benefit exceeds potential risk. Check out http://www.drugs.com/sfx/qsymia-side-effects.html for info re Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate). Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate): Hi. Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) is a decent weight loss drug. Your BMI is 47.5, and Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) has not been shown to be effective in a similar patient population as far as I'm aware. I know your weight makes your life very difficult, and my heart goes out to you. Your weight is a serious health risk to you. It would be worth talking with an experienced bariatric surgery group about options. Good luck! ...Read more

As a doctor what's your opinion of the new weight loss drug qsymia (phentermine and topiramate)? Would you/have you used it yet? Results?
Not so new: Dr's have used this drug (combo of 2 generics changed into an er). It's a safe & effective medication when used in the right person for the right amount of time. Note that safe does not mean without side effects. It should be used for no more than a few months along w/ ongoing lifestyle changes (dietary modification, exercise). The key is maintaining that lifestyle change once med stopped. ...Read more
