The Good and bad: Gastric bypass is effective but it's a rather complicated surgery and requires lifestyle commitment to healthy eating and exercise. Like to lose 50 pounds. I was told they would do the band on me, but not gastric bypass. Why one and not the other?

Lap band: There are a lot of factors that go into selecting which operation is ideal for a patient and not enough room to answer that here. Bands are often selected in people who have less weight to lose, who are volume eaters, and are not sweet eaters. I'd be happy to discuss this further with you. ...Read more

You need to see a bariatric surgeon that specializes in revisions and get an UGI and egd. ...Read more

Is there a diet that I can go on to shrink my gastric bypass pouch back down to the size that it was. Have lost over 200+ want to go another 50 lbs. ?

Probably not: Diet alone will not shrink the pouch. However, limiting your portion sizes should help. Be sure you are limiting high fat foods and carbohydrates. Most people eat too much of these. If you limit them you should lose weight. Also, are you exercising? If you walk daily it should help with weight loss. Be sure to talk with your doctor about a good goal weight. Good luck! ...Read more

I had gastric bypass in jan 2012. I weighed 300 lbs. 9 months later I am 146 lbs. What is the least i can weigh to still be healthy.?

Depends on height: Healthy is more than just weight. However, doctors use a scale called bmi to determine healthy weight. For example, if you we're 5 foot 5 inches, then "normal" weight would be about 135-150. Exercise, vitamins, and healthy lifestyle/eating is also important. ...Read more

Do gastric sleeve or gastric bypass work better for losing weight?

Both similar: The sleeve and bypass work in almost all patients. Our experience is to expect about an 80% excess body weight loss with the bypass and 70% with the sleeve. So if you weigh 250 and you are supposed to weigh 150, then you have an excess weight of 100 lbs. Most patients make their decision based on side effects or risks. Both are great. ...Read more
