Control-yes. Cure?: Heartburn (gerd) is a pain! many reasons for it. Usually obese, poor diet and lifestyle, but many are thin, eat properly and it is there. Avoiding fatty meals, alcohol, spices to some extent, avoiding eating or drinking after 6 P.M., elevating the head of bed 6-8 inches, taking antacids, alginates, h-2 blockers like pepcid, (famotidine) etc, prilosec, etc may help. Reflux: Sounds like you're getting some reflux. The most natural way to help the symptoms is to try to avoid foods and drinks that could aggravate it: alcohol, caffeine, high fat foods, spicy foods, tomato juice. Avoid lying down within 2-3 hours of a meal. If you're still having symptoms, then you can try otc Tums (calcium carbonate) or heartburn. But avoidance of food/drink triggers is key! ...Read more
I was recently prescribed 40mg daily dose of protonix (pantoprazole) for 8 weeks to "fix" heartburn/acid-levels. I was wondering if ppi's actually cure heartburn?
Depends on cause: Ulcers and gastritis and even erosive disorders are definitely helping cure. But there are other causes of heartburn for which the medication will help relieve symptoms but not cure.
