I'm nervous about asking my questions because I have never been to a gynecologist before. What should I do?

Prepare: I agree with writing down the list of questions prior to the appointment. Keep in mind that the physician is there for you. Bring someone if that would make you feel comfortable. Good luck.

My question is for a gynecologist. Anyone familiar with the OTC supplement "Amberen" for menopausal relief? Thoughts on it?

My question is for a gynecologist. Anyone familiar with the OTC supplement "Amberen" for menopausal relief? Thoughts on it?

Menopause: This supplement claims to help against menopausal symptoms. There are no clinical trials to support this. Looking at the label and ingredients there is no scientific reason to think that it would. Also reading the online reviews from people who tried it most said that it did not help. This is not surprising.

Question about women's cancers - is there a difference between a gynecologist and a gynecology oncologist?

Question about women's cancers - is there a difference between a gynecologist and a gynecology oncologist?

Big difference: A gynecologist is a doctor that screens and may diagnose female cancers. They also see patients for things like period problems and birth control. A gynecologic oncologist treats cancers of the cervix, uterus, ovaries, tubes, vagina, and vulva (not breast).

Surgery or drugs: For women with leiomyomas (fibroids) there are a few treatment options. 1) surgery to remove fibroids; 2) medication to shrink fibroids (depot lupron); 3) uterine artery emobolization (a radiology procedure to starve fibroid of blood supply); and 4) expectant management or do nothing. If you are having pain or desire conception, see a doctor for more specific advice re management.

Differences between men/women gynecologists. I've heard that women are less sensitive to thoughts/feelings. True?

Doctors Personality: I have heard these rumors myself over my career. But, of course the rumors or myths are not true. All kinds of physicians have all kinds of personalities. You should not choose your doctor on the basis of their gender. But, you choose someone who listens and answers your questions.

How could a gynecologist help me?

In many ways: Seeing your gyn every year is a good idea. Though there are discussions in the literature about the need for yearly pap smears, it is prudent to see your gyn for a complete breast and pelvic exam, as well as to review your needs re: birth control, calcium/ vit d intake, breast self exam, diet, exercise, and to have a second set of eyes, in addition to your pmd, to evaluate you for non-gyn issues.
