See a sleep dr: What does a 'normal' sleep study mean. To some that means 'no apnea' which is not the only finding to be gained. What was the quality like, what were the latencies of sleep and rem and were there parasomnia. Alcohol?: What you are describing happens when you wake up from rem sleep. Melatonin has nothing to do with it, it is not an fda approved medication, and I am not sure why you are taking it. None of the medications you listed is expected to cause vivid dreams. Alcohol, and certain sleeping pills could do that. Very good question: I hear all sorts of marketing claims regarding sleep meds and tendency to preserve various phases of sleep, but not really convinced that any do not disrupt patterns. However, your best bet prescription wise might be lunesta, and otc melatonin would also be relatively appropriate. Other causes: Alpha wave intrusions have not been shown to be a problem by themselves, and do not need treatment. Assuming the CPAP is set correctly, controls the apnea, and you are using it every night all night, i would look for other causes of sleepiness (including narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia).
