Maybe neither....: I'm not sure I have enough information to tell you what is going on. What type of hernia? Do you have problems swallowing? Or just a gag reflex? This is probably better suited for an in-person visit to determine what is going on. Sorry nobody has helped thus far. ...Read more

Possible: Sometimes the presence of a hiatal hernia can cause symptoms such as feeling the need to clear your throat frequently. Is this the type of feeling you are experiencing? If it is a sliding hiatal hernia, it's possible that the esophagus gets a "kink" in it which could cause the symptom you are describing.
