Maybe neither....: I'm not sure I have enough information to tell you what is going on. What type of hernia? Do you have problems swallowing? Or just a gag reflex? This is probably better suited for an in-person visit to determine what is going on. Sorry nobody has helped thus far. ...Read more

Possible: Sometimes the presence of a hiatal hernia can cause symptoms such as feeling the need to clear your throat frequently. Is this the type of feeling you are experiencing? If it is a sliding hiatal hernia, it's possible that the esophagus gets a "kink" in it which could cause the symptom you are describing. I wouldn't expect this from a small hernia, but you never know. Talk to your doctor to clarify. ...Read more

I have a "small" hiatal hernia, and lately have had pain and swelling in the xiphoid process and around to my back.Could these be related?

Doubtful: The esophageal hiatus (the hole in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes) can stretch out to allow some or all of the stomach to go into the chest is located just in front of the spine. It would not cause swelling near the xiphoid process. Maybe excess gas in the stomach or colon could cause that. It doesn't sound specific to any one diagnosis. Hope this helps! ...Read more
