A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more

I have a wrist fracture near the thumb. The fracture is small but i put my wrist in cast. I am 18 years. Will this work? Or i need a surgery?
Depends: A picture of your x-ray is really necessary for any orthopaedic surgeon or upper extremity surgeon to have any idea what to advise on this manner. The scaphoid is a wrist bone on the thumb side that is notorious for being a difficult bone to heal, while a chip fracture off other bones on the thumb side can be significant only in that they indicate ligament injury (sprain). ...Read more
Fell on wrist, bruising and some swelling. A week later it really hurts to put weight on it still but nothing else. Initial x Ray showed no fracture. ?
Should be rechecked : X-rays can definitely miss some kinds of fractures, especially initially. The good news is they tend not to be extremely serious fractures, but still can require different treatment. Sprains can also take a long time to heal. Sometimes a wrist mobilizer I can help. If you continue to have problems you should be rechecked ...Read more

Your : Your question is a good one but absolutely impossible to answer in any meaningful way without knowing many more details of the injury, having a good exam, and seeing the x-ray at the very least. Assuming that this is a so-called articular fracture, that is in to the joint, one would have to know what the joint surfaces look like, how displaced the bone fragments are etc... While at 2 and 1/2 months you are already beyond the normal healing period for this type of fracture, you should still not delay in seeking a medical evaluation. At the very least you will be started on appropriate therapy. Even without insurance, see if there is not a local hospital clinic that can help out. Best of luck. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 9 year-old has a wrist buckle fracture. The dr. Put her in a cast 5" past the elbow. Is that a bit much? Can we put her in a wrist splint?
Buckle fracture: Yes. A buckle fracture is a very stable fracture and can be treated either way - a splint or cast. It comes down to 2 issues. Personal preference and if you can trust the child to keep it on at all times but washing. The only downside to splinting is it may take a little more time to completely heal but that is a small trade off compared to no washing with a cast and possible cast complicatons. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
