Not a good idea!: Will not help a mid ear infection-need an oral antibiotic. May cause significant burning in an ear canal (outer ear) infection. Severe burning if you have hole in eardrum with infection. Only ok, mixed with white vinegar, for ear canal drying/cleaning, if no canal inflammation & no eardrum perforation. See an otology/ent md for treatment. ...Read more

Ever since an ear ache I always get water in ear which stays for days even with alcohol treatment. Alcohol treatment also stays in ear for days. Why?
Don't put it in ear: If you are feeling liquid in your ear, it may be a discharge from a middle ear infection with a hole in the eardrum. Do not put alcohol into your ear. It is toxic to tissues, and if you have a perforated eardrum it can cause damage to the delicate structures of the middle ear. See your health care provider and/or an ear, nose and throat specialist. ...Read more
Had ear pain 2 mo. Ago, put alcohol in and got better, but after week had cold with dizziness. 2 mo. Latter only dizziness returned. Why?
Different Structures: Ear pain and changes in hearing are separate anatomically from dizziness and vertigo pain that responds to a little water/alcohol mix suggests the ear canal. A cold and dizziness can affect the middle ear by changing function of the eustacian tube (middle ear) and associated labyrinthitis (vestibular apparatus responsible in part for our balance) which is not part of the hearing mechanism. ...Read more
For the last two month alcohol consumption has been causing ear pain and swollen cervical nodes. One drink is all it takes.
Not sure why: I asked one of my ENT colleagues if he had seen this, and he said he had not. I don't know why alcohol would do this, and it may actually be some kind of allergic reaction. It seems, though, that you keep trying to test it, so it would appear that drinking is important to you. I would see your pcp, and an ENT consultation (ears, nose&throat) might be necessary. Talk to your doctor about drinking. ...Read more
I am 16, have never smoked/drank alcohol. I am a classical singer and recently I have a sore throat, and ear pain. I also am not in my usual range.?
Singer off tune: Often times singers have issues which cause their voices to sound hoarse. Most often they are unable to hit their high notes and their range is off. The two most common problems are reflux and allergy. For reflux avoid spicy foods and follow a low acid diet. Avoid tomatoes and caffeine as well as chocolate. For allergy try an over the counter antihistimine like claritin (loratadine). See an ENT voice doctor. ...Read more

High: High pressures generated from a valsalva maneuver that you performed could generate the type of sound that you described if you had a perforation. Also, if you tasted your eardrops that could be an indirect sign of perforation as a pathway from your ear canal, through a perforation, down the eustacian tube, and into the back of your throat. If you haven't seen an ent, it may be wise to have this checked, get a hearing test, and discuss options for possible corrective surgery if you have a perforation, or other appropriate tympanomastoid surgery depending on the severity of the problem. ...Read more

Hi. My son is 2 ys and 8 mths old. He woke up crying because of an ear ache. Is it safe to put lidosporin drops? If yes after how long and how many? Thx
It would be best: To have a doctor look in the ear. Covering up pain, and potentially introducing liquid into a eardrum that is at risk of rupture may worsen things. If it's possible to have someone look in the ear to look for foreign bodies, insects, perforation of the eardrum or fluid behind the eardrum with the tool doctors use (an otoscope) is the best way to go. Check for fever, and note any other symptoms. ...Read more

35yr old and I get frequent earaches. I have had my ears cleaned 2x in 3yrs and had a hard black lump come out each time. What could be wrong?
I get earaches occasionally. I find that if I lean my head sideways so that the ear that is aching is facing the floor the pain goes away. Is this a clue as to what might be causing the pain?
Probably not: It is likely that when you do that, it moves the fluid around in your ear, which relieves the pressure and makes it feel better. This ear ache may be due to allergies, infection, or fluid in the ear. Would see your doc about it. Good luck! ...Read more
