?: Not sure what you mean by locking up. You may be simply fatiguing your muscles. If you hit a limit, stop and rest and then resume. You will be more effective doing less reps with breaks in between then powering thru till complete fatigue and max reps every time. Yes: It is very common to just focus on the chest wall muscles when working out. While pushups will help strengthen the shoulder (pec, deltoid, lats) I would also advise complementing it with posterior chain/shoulder exercises like rows, pull downs and shrugs. Suggestion: Assuming that you suffer from anterior dislocations, where the humeral head moves out the front of the socket, I would recommend you look at the thrower's 10 program. Concentrate on the exercises for shoulder... 1: the arthritis itself produces the crackling/popping sounds with movement of whichever joint is affected;
2: another rarer possibility is presence of a bursa (a natural sac with fluid in it, which is present on some prominent bones). When there is inflammation, called bursitis, it can produce crackling sounds.
