Doctor insights on:
My nail beds have been turning purple recently, now my thumb nail beds are so purple they're nearly black. My hands don't feel cold - what is this?
Possibly related to: Spasms of the blood vessels of the nailbed, so called Raynaud's phenomenon. Cold sometimes is a trigger. But emotional stress can set it off too. Exposures to many different things can. In some cases this can be related to associated autoimmune disease like lupus, or other disease processes. Your best bet is to be evaluated by a doctor in person, to make sure nothing more concerning is going on ...Read more

Noticed a small bug bite on my thumb with a purple circle around it. Have had for a few days. What could this be?
Need photo: It is not possible to identify the type of insect that caused the lesion, but the purple discoloration sounds like hemorrhage or bleeding under the skin which can be related to some insect bites, but could also be related to minor trauma or infection. If it is painful, I advise that you have it evaluated by a doctor. Itching is more common with a benign insect bite and it should resolve. ...Read more
I slammed my thumb in a car door on accident and the swelling hasn't gone down and its reddish purple. Can you tell me what's wrong?
I was gaming for several hours and I woke up with my left thumb bigger than my right. It feels swollen but its not purple or anything.?
We'll amputate!: Joke! Naturally if you do any activity for a long period it can cause swelling. Your Left thumb is not in as good shape as your Right one. If you are rRght handed it is not surprising that your right thumb can work longer without trouble. Too much gaming, enough to cause physical symptoms is a big sign that you need to back off some and have other hobbies. Don't be a "1 trick pony." ...Read more
I have a purple/blue vertical line going down the middle of my left thumb, from the bottom to the top of the nail. Should I be worried?
Discoloration of the nail can be benign melanonychia, or represent a melanoma skin cancer.
Hutchinson's sign represents discoloration onto the soft tissue at the proximal nail fold. If the color "bleeds" onto the skin, this can represent a melanoma.
If it is not there is does mean it is not a melanoma however. Always best to have it evaluated. ...Read more

My 79 yr. Old mom has been having dizzy spells with her left thumb turning cold and purple. She has has CT and been checked up an my mom has been checked out through various scans but nothing comes up neg.
A cold, purple digit (finger, thumb, or toe) often indicates a problem with blood supply. Blood vessels can be affected by a lot of things, including inflammatory and rheumatologic conditions (such as vasculitis or raynaud's syndrome), or degenerative changes, such as atherosclerosis. It is difficult to relate many of these causes to other things that cause dizziness, but when an upper limb is involved, one's mind tends to consider a condition such as subclavian steal syndrome. Disorders suspicious for blood vessel involvement can often be checked by ultrasound, which is a (fairly) inexpensive and (fairly) comfortable test.
Dizziness in older people is a dangerous symptom, because it can often lead to falls. Complications resulting from falls are the leading cause of death from injury in those older than age 65, and the fifth leading cause of death in older adults. Dizziness and falls in older people have a large number of causes, many of which aren't easily fixed. But, there is very good medical evidence that physical therapy (pt) involving exercise (gait, balance, strength, flexibility, movement, general physical activity, and endurance) reduce the rate of falls and the risk of falling.
It is important to get these issues checked out. A good first step would be a primary care (internal medicine or family practice) doctor, who could help to determine whether the problem needs consultation by a rheumatologist, neurologist, or vascular surgeon, and who can arrange physical therapy consultation to reduce the risk of falls. ...Read more

Barely hit my hand/fingers & the vein/vessel burst, stings, hurts & then turns purple. I'm in my 30's & had this since a child. Why? What causes it?
Vein bursting: If you are experiencing increasing amounts of bruising, there are a few concerns. One would be if your blood is unusually thin. This can be because of low platelets (the clotting cell of your blood) or a decrease in the amounts of clotting factors. You should discuss this with your doctor as simple blood tests can diagnosis this. There can also be structural problems with the veins causing this. ...Read more
