Yes and no: The fordyce spots are normal, however if you have Lichen Planus it is not "normal". However, the cause is usually unknown. It has been associated with Hep B, C, chemical exposure, ACE inhibitor use, NSAID use. Talk to your doctor about the rash. Read more

Melanoma Signs: The first signs can appear in one or more atypical moles. That's why it's so important to get to know your skin very well and to recognize any changes in the moles on your body. Look for the abcde signs of melanoma, and if you see one or more, make an appointment with a physician immediately. Abcde: asymmetry, irregular border, varied color, large diameter, evolving or changing. Read more

Good day. I've had burning while urinating and red spots in genital area. STD tests~a month ago-all negative. Urologist thinks prostatitis. Thoughts?

Good day. I've had burning while urinating and red spots in genital area. STD tests~a month ago-all negative. Urologist thinks prostatitis. Thoughts?

CPPS?: Prostatitis or infections that cause it don't cause "red spots"; separate problems. At age 28, most apparent prostatitis is chronic pelvic pain syndrome. CPPS overlaps with prostatitis but there is no infection; urinary discomfort or pain are from pelvic muscle tension, often anxiety driven, e.g. after a regretted sexual exposure. OK to try cipro (ciprofloxacin) per urologist's advice, but it may not work. Read more

Loss of pubic hair: Could have been scarring of hair follicles and therefore there is no hair, just like in a burn. Have this small sting on my genital area followed by a small bald spot. What can this be? Has me worried. No pain rarely itch. Help!

Penis bumps: Penis bumps can be many things. Some STDs, some not. Only general advice can be given without a photo or physical exam. Top 2 photos are non-STDs: Fordyce spots (sebum which can be extricated by M.D. or left alone), Infected hair follicle (plucked and kept clean). Bottom 2 photos are STDs (HPV and Molluscum) to be evaluated by your MD so s/he can rule out other STDs and council you for prevention. Read more

If 1 has HSV 2 and has only had outbreaks around the oral area, does that mean (s)he can still get the symptoms around the genital area in the future?

If 1 has HSV 2 and has only had outbreaks around the oral area, does that mean (s)he can still get the symptoms around the genital area in the future?

Maybe: The lab tests for herpes simplex I and ii are imperfect and subject to false positives and negatives, and HSV ii acquired on the mouth usually stays there. Since diagnosis and treatment / prevention are based primarily on the clinical picture, and are largely empirical, i'd urge you to relax. And congratulations on your proactive approach to your health. Read more

No symptoms associated with Herpes. I developed 7 bumps in my genital area after oral relations. Partner of 5yrs, no signs of sores. Only partner. HELP?

Not herpes: Based on your description, it is very unlikely this is herpes and almost certainly not any STD. I doubt you caught it from the "oral relations". See your doctor for diagnosis and advice. Read more

I have a rash that started bright red and elevated bumps turned into blotchy purple spots but not pin pricks no other symptoms should I see a doctor?

I have two spots in my genital region near the vulva that are slightly red, not raised, and the only symptom is they itch like crazy! What is it?

Not certain.: When you say "near the vulva, do you mean "in the pubic area" or "on the outer labia"? Itchy lesions in the pubic area can be caused by insect bites (including flea bites and pubic lice, ugh!). Itching in the vaginal or labial area can be caused by an allergic reaction or a yeast infection. If they don't clear up in a day or so, or if you notice other symptoms, get medical care. Read more

True that you are less likely to get hsv1 in the genital area (oral sex) if you already have it in the mouth area? What are symptoms of genital hsv1?

True that you are less likely to get hsv1 in the genital area (oral sex) if you already have it in the mouth area? What are symptoms of genital hsv1?

Yes it's true: I think this is your third question. People are immune (or at least highly resistant) to new infections with the HSV type they already have, anywhere on the body. Symptoms are identical for HSV1 or HSV2, typically with blisters that become painful sores, first infection often with swollen lymph nodes nearby, sometimes fever. Genital HSV1 usually causes far fewer recurrent outbreaks than HSV2. Read more

I have test positive for HSV 1 but I have not any symptoms. I have been having dry spots on my penis that I am not sure is my first outbreak. I know that HSV 1 usually cause moutb cold sores but since I have not had any I am curious if I may have genital

Maybe: We know now that 1 in 5 Americans have the HSV 1 and/or 2 virus. The vast majority of them don't even know that they have it. The slide used in lectures is of an ice berg with the portion above the water being those who have had outbreaks. Unfortunately both types 1and2 can be either oral or genital and the only way to know where u have the virus is by having an outbreak. The best advice is to b safe Read more
