Punctured wound: Development of an infection is greatest concern and will depend on how deep the nail got. If shallow, rate of infection should be almost minimal. If deep, surface cleaning make not be enough to prevent bacterial infection. Close observation of the wound for redness, pain and tenderness is prudent and if present later, have your physician prescribe antibiotics. If there is pus, have md do a culture. ...Read more

Should I get a tetanus injection after suffering a puncture wound?

Depends on situation: If you have not had a booster within the last 10 yrs, you should consider one after any wound that might allow tetanus spores (that are in the dust or dirt) a chance to get under your skin.Wounds involving garden tools, dirt, & dirty environments are the most worrisome. A simple jab in your skin from a pin or staple is not so worrisome. ...Read more

Last 48 hours I've had increasedmuscle spasms all over my body/immense pain in my neck. Cut myself with a kitchen knife puncture wound last week but haven't had tetanus shot in 12 years should I worry?

Yes: While the anecdotal time frame is to get a tetanus immunization every 10 years there is no accurate telling that your immunization is still effective. Your symptoms and the length of time since your injury could be the early symptoms of tetanus. I would advise you to see an infectious disease specialist or a neurologist asap. ...Read more

What age do kids get their first tetanus shot? My 3 year old fell on a bike sprocket and got scrapes and a small puncture wound, should I take him to the er?

What age do kids get their first tetanus shot? My 3 year old fell on a bike sprocket and got scrapes and a small puncture wound, should I take him to the er?

Children: Children typically receive their first tetanus shot at 2 months, the second at 4 months, and the third at 6 months, the fourth between 15 and 18 months, and the fifth between 4 and 6 years of age. Then, the next dose is between ages 11 and 12 years old, and then up to every 10 years afterwards.

I would clean the wound with soap and water, and then take your child to your regular doctor. Probably your child is up to date on his tetanus shots - but your child's doctor would know for sure (although he wouldn't have received the 5th dose of the primary series). Your doctor can evaluate the wound and the piece he fell on - in general, if the metal is not rusty or "dirty" (i.e. Was lying in a cow pasture) it should be okay. However, seeing your doctor is a good idea to see also if the scrapes and the wound require stitches, and possibly topical or oral antibiotics.

Good luck! It's hard watching them learn to ride, isn't it? I was chewing my nails the whole time... ...Read more

I have a puncture wound from a rusty nail and can't remember when my last tetanus shot was. It has been very well cleaned. Advice?

I have a puncture wound from a rusty nail and can't remember when my last tetanus shot was. It has been very well cleaned. Advice?

Depends: Today it is common for OBGYNs to recommend the TdaP vaccine during pregnancy, but people remember it more for the pertussis part. If you had one with a pregnancy within the past 10 yrs you may be okay, if not the vaccine is a reasonable precaution and would give you protection now & for a while. ...Read more

Small (not deep) puncture wound on side of big toe from clean piece of metal. Flushed it & antibio ointment. Last Tetanus in '09. Do I need another?

Small (not deep) puncture wound on side of big toe from clean piece of metal. Flushed it & antibio ointment. Last Tetanus in '09. Do I need another?

No: Your prior booster in 09 will have you covered. If you had dragged your open wound through a lot of soil and debris, and left it untended over a long period, it might be a benefit to some. Some advise landscapers and other outside workers to boost at 5 years if their work constantly exposes them to the tetanus spores. Your case does not rise to that level of concern. ...Read more

I got a small puncture wound from a rusty, metal toilet cleaning brush in our bathroom. Didn't bleed, but hurt, still does. Last tetanus shot 8 yrs ago?

I got a small puncture wound from a rusty, metal toilet cleaning brush in our bathroom. Didn't bleed, but hurt, still does. Last tetanus shot 8 yrs ago?

Tetanus: This is uncommon in the USA because of immunizations. There are less than 70 cases a year. Since boosters are recommended every 10 years you should be fine, but it would not hurt if you went and got the booster now. You don't say where the puncture wound was. If in the sole of the foot make sure there is no infection. If the pain continues make sure the bristles did not break off in the wound. ...Read more

Husband got puncture wounds from new barb wire. Does he need a tetanus shot? He hasn't had one in over 10 yrs. If so, how long can he wait?

Yes: The cdc recommends a tetanus shot booster every ten years or for certain exposures. Symptoms develop about 3-8 days after exposure to the bacteria. Good luck, I hope this helps. If so, please vote for me. Heres a link for more info. Http://www. Cdc. Gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/tetanus/. ...Read more

Can I get tetanus from deep puncture of indoor cat scratch. Got tetanus shot right after the scratch but still worried. Wound did bleed a lot.

Shift focus: If you had your booster, I would discount the issue of tetanus completely and focus on the possibility of a simple wound infection. Monitor the site for change in color, redness, oozing or swelling and keep it clean. If the site remains stable, this should heal well. ...Read more
