Hypertension (Definition)

A blood pressure reading has two numbers: a systolic blood pressure and a diastolic blood pressure. The systolic blood pressure is the maximum pressure the blood exerts on the vessels when the heart is beating. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure the blood exerts on the vessels in between heartbeats. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, begins when the systolic blood pressure remains above 140 or when the diastolic blood pressure remains above 90. Hypertension can be a result of increased blood flow through vessels or increased resistance to ...Read more

Does pulmonary hypertension cause right atrial enlargement?

Does pulmonary hypertension cause right atrial enlargement?

PAH: Yes it can. In Pulmonary Hypertension, imagine the right side of the heart as a pump and the pulmonary arteries as a dam. When pulmonary artery pressures keep going up, the blood backs up into the pump (heart) and can affect both chambers of the right side of the heart. The Right Atrium can enlarge and the Right Ventricle can enlarge, become thick, or lose ability to pump properly. ...Read more

Can pulmonary hypertension cause tachycardia?

Yes: If the heart function is reduced (called heart failure) by working against the pulmonary hypertension, then one way the heart compensates to increase blood flow is by increasing the heart rate, i.e. Tachycardia. ...Read more

Would pulmonary hypertension cause high blood pressure?

Would pulmonary hypertension cause high blood pressure?

Blood pressure: Usually when there is pulmonary hypertension of significance, there is normal or decreased systemic blood pressure. Sometimes in the early phase of pulmonary hypertension there can be systemic hypertension but not when right heart dysfunction results from the elevated pulmonary resistance ...Read more

Do panic attacks cause pulmonary hypertension? Or could pulmonary hypertension cause panic attacks?

Do panic attacks cause pulmonary hypertension? Or could pulmonary hypertension cause panic attacks?

No and yes: Panic attacks, while frightening cannot cause any disease themselves. Pulmonary hypertension is a chronic heart/lung disease which develops over years. Any disease process which causes shortness of breath can trigger panic attacks in people who are prone. Panic attacks are an inappropriate triggering of the system which helps us recognize when we are in danger, so shortness of breath can trip it. ...Read more

Would pulmonary hypertension cause a restrictive pattern on spirometry (fvc = 50% of expected for age).

Would pulmonary hypertension cause a restrictive pattern on spirometry (fvc = 50% of expected for age).

The other way around: Can be the case, as in restrictive lung disease leading to pulmonary hypertension. But in your case, where it is suspected to be a neuromuscular form of lung disease, this much less commonly leads to pulmonary hypertension than other restrictive causes like pulmonary fibrosis ...Read more

Small left sided heart with abnormal septal motion in ventricle EF 60-65% heart is normal including thickness. Possible pulmonary hypertension cause?

Small left sided heart with abnormal septal motion in ventricle EF 60-65% heart is normal including thickness. Possible pulmonary hypertension cause?

MRI: If you have severe pulmonary hypertension, you may have Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. This is potentially a serious diagnosis. Intracardiac and intrapulmonary shunting must be ruled out. A cardiac MRI and nuclear shunt test can make this determination. These tests are likely only available at a major referral center - London. Good luck. ...Read more

Is pulmonary hypertension reversable if caused by asd or valve once the problem is corrected?

Is pulmonary hypertension reversable if caused by asd or valve once the problem is corrected?

Usually: A really bad atrial septal defect that causes longstanding pulmonary hypertension will damage the vessels permanently (eisenmenger's). Get it fixed now if you can. There's other good reasons as well. ...Read more

I get tired when standing for a while& in hot weather+I feel heaviness and bounding heart, I have moderate pulmonary hypertension, can it cause that?

Pulmonary HTN: Certainly pulmonary hypertension could cause those kind of symptoms. The bigger question is why does someone who is 19 years old have pulmonary hypertension in the first place? If it is somehow reversible, that would be vital to know. You should see your doctor to examine this. Good luck. ...Read more

Can high blood pressure cause pulmonary hypertension without the pulmonary vessels constricting?

Can high blood pressure cause pulmonary hypertension without the pulmonary vessels constricting?

PULMONARY PRESSURES: Hypertension can cause a myriad of problems ranging from systemic to isolated organ damage (eyes, kidneys). Pulmonary hypertension is "high pulmonary vascular pressures" typically due to a filling issue upon return to the heart (obstruction) or an intrinsic problem of the tissue of the lung itself (stiffness). High blood pressure can worsen pulmonary hypertension but it does not cause it, per se ...Read more

Can 5 weeks of pulmonary hypertension (as well as a few other diagnoses) lead to moderate anoxic brain injury? A patient in his early 50's receives diagnosis of mssa- causing pulmonary hypertension, chf, aortic valve regurgitation, a stretched mitral valv

Endocarditis: Anoxic brain injury can occur after cardiac arrest. The heart disease you mention could lead to cardiac arrest but you did not mention this in your history. I am concerned about endocarditis, infection of the heart valve, with history of mssa bacteremia. ...Read more

Pulmonary Hypertension (Definition)

Elevated blood pressure in the lungs that can be a primary problem or due to other causes. The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs and if the blood pressure in the lungs is elevated, the right side of the heart can fail.
