Will pulmicort flexhaler 180mcg cause false negative in a methacholine test. I also take 10mg singulair (montelukast) daily. How does these affect the test?

Methacholine test: The methacholine test for asthma is a tricky diagnostic tool. There are many medications that interfere with its accuracy. Bronchodilators albuterol, salmeterol, formoterol and theophylline have to be withheld before the test. Singulair/montelukast has to be stopped for a day. Regular Pulmicort/ other steroid use before the test may also affect results. The test works best in untreated patients. ...Read more

No: For a medication like pulmicort via nebulizer you don't have to wait exactly 12 hrs to re-administer. You can do it twice a day as the instructions state. Some medications do need to be given in a very timely manner. ...Read more
