Chest pain: If you've inflammed an intercostal muscle or a chest wall muscle it can take some weeks to heal. Doesn't matter: Whether a rib is broken or bruised is not a particularly meaningful distinction- both are quite painful and the pain lasts for weeks. An easy way to tell the difference, is to compress the chest wall (place hands away from the area of soreness). When you compress the chest wall, if pain is felt at the area of soreness, the rib is likely cracked (bruises only hurt when you press directly on them). ...Read more

Rib pain treatments: You did not state if the pain was in the chest wall, area or the back; but will try to assist. Pulling a rib may be either muscular or a torsion at the attachment sights. Unfortunately, when you strain a muscle near the ribs, it is impossible to 100% rest is - due to the need of the diaphragm and ribs for breathing...
