What should I do about a tonsil stone stuck in a mis-formed crater/pocket in left tonsil? I cannot get it out by ANY means and are getting worried.

Tonsil stones: Greetings, the tonsil stone is a product of food particles that get smushed from the tongue - tonsil interaction during a swallow. I recommend trying gargling with water, massage with a wet q-tip if you are able to not gag and try to disengage the tonsil stone. If that fails, see your ENT doctor. I have taken out many in the office. Good Luck ...Read more

I have reoccurring puss pockets on my tonsils. I'm a singer and I'm afraid if I get my tonsils out my voice will change. What should I do?

Surgery by Voice ENT: Recurrent tonsillitis can and usually causes a significant impact in your quality of life, not to mention days of school/work missed and the inability to sing while ill. Studies have shown that tonsillectomy in singers is safe and effective, especially when done by an ENT surgeon familiar with the singing patient. I would recommend obtaining a referral to an ENT that your vocal coach knows. ...Read more

Leaving for vacation tmrw, have white puss pockets on both tonsils, painless past few days. Started z pack tonight, should it clear up?

Very likely: It seems like you have tonsillitis which are most commonly caused by viruses and bacteria. Azithromycin (z-pack) is a pretty good antibiotic for bacteria such as strep. Viruses usually run their course within a few days however can sometimes last longer when mononucleosis (mono) is involved. If it does not improve, then I would suggest getting tested for mono. ...Read more

I have a pocket below my left tonsil in my throat where food collects. Usually I can cough it back up. What could cause this?

Tonsillar crypt: The palatine (throat) tonsil has many indentations called crypts which increase the surface area of the tonsil. It is not uncommon for food particles to be caught in them. If you have no pain, or inflammation (tonsillitis) or terrible odor, gently cleaning the area with a Q-tip can be successful. If you get bleeding, see an ENT doctor. ...Read more

White balls: Hello, the white balls in the back of your throat sound like tonsilliths. These are food particles that get stuck in the tonsil tissues. I have a small tear in what looks to be a film or membrane over my right tonsil. Throat hurts, no white pockets/swelling. I can see a swollen vein.

Probable tonsilitis: It is always difficult to describe the appearance of a tonsil without a good direct light source. What you see in front of a mirror is not reliable. Unless you clearly remember that you scratched your tonsil with a foreign object, the pain is indicative of an inflammation or early infection. Gargle vigorously with warm saline may clarify the outcome a bit more. ...Read more

The reason for antibiotic treatment of group a strep is to prevent you from getting rheumatic fever as a consequence of the strep infection. With non group a strep, you have have to worry about rheumatic fever and so antibiotics aren't required for prevention but you should talk to your doctor about it. ...Read more
