Psychological Reason Hold Bowel Movements
Control: Children often feel like they have little or no control over their environment, and stooling is something they can sometimes control. It's the one battle of wills that kids can win over parents. Other times, it's about avoidance, of either pain or the sensation of loss (yes, they are attached to the poop sometimes). One good hard bm and they will try to not have another one. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
The gastrointestinal tract starts at the mouth, travel down the tunnel (esophagus), which connects to the stomach, which then empties into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum---the three parts of the small intestine (@25 feet). Spicy foods often have an ingredient capsaicin which can set off the p nerve fibers in the body. It seems that some people have more sensitive nerve fibers in their body and the capsaicin found in hot peppers triggers this. ...Read more
Can proctalgia fugax be the reason for painful bowel movements? Pain is not severe and doesn't last long.

Pain with a bowel movement is more likely from anal irritation at the rectal orifice. This usually happens when a person tries to pass an unusually hard stool - as when we are constipated. The tissues tear a bit, and bleed. Hemorrhoids can bleed also. I think you should go to the er if the bleeding is heavy (unlikely). But do talk to your doctor about this problem. Lgromkomd. ...Read more
