It requires more than neuropsychological testing, since there are many medical conditions that can mimic Alzheimers, some of which can be more effectively treated (hypothyroidism, central nervous system infections, vitamin deficiencies, brain tumors etc). It is certainly understandable that the circumstances described would create great stress for the custodial parent and could contribute to the mood disorder described. However, if that parent had custody for 16 years, it is reasonable to assume that the child is at least 16 years of age and certainly in many state jurisdictions has a say about which parent he/she wishes to live with. It is not stated why the long term custodial parent lost custody nor what the nature of the alleged abuse might have been. I agree, parents: Are role models for their children. They are learning to drink. In addition, their children are at high risk to either become alcoholics or marry one. There is also a strong hereditary factor which make the risk of becoming addicted higher. Sons of alcoholic fathers ; daughters of alcoholic mothers are at highest risk. ...Read more
