Could not taking my Prozac (fluoxetine) for 2 weeks cause my depression to become worse?

Yes: Although Prozac (fluoxetine) is metabolized very slowly in the body, missing multiple doses can lead to a relapse. Most serotonin drugs are not effective until they are taken for several weeks in a row. Please take all medications as prescribed. If you cannot tolerate a medication due to a side effect, consult your physician on how to stop it. ...Read more

Is it true when starting Prozac (fluoxetine) that anxiety/depression can get worse before getting better?

Is it true when starting Prozac (fluoxetine) that anxiety/depression can get worse before getting better?

Yes: Unfortunately, it usually takes 2+ weeks for the good effects of antidepressants to start, while side-effects can happen right away. Prozac (fluoxetine) is a relatively activating or stimulating antidepressant. It can worsen anxiety, especially at first. (in fact, if anxiety was a major problem, i might choose a different ssri in the first place.) the prescribing doc should help with any side effects. ...Read more

I've taken Prozac (fluoxetine) for 3 days and i feel my depression worse than ever. I have suicidal ideation, anhedonia. should i continue taking it?

Please see doctor: Please see your doctor asap. Please realize medicines that help depression do not work the same as meds, for example, that treat infections. Our brains often take 3-6 weeks to heal from depression IF they are going to respond to the anti-depressant medication. It is not unusual to need med changes if there is no response or they are intolerable. Support and talk therapy are vital as a bridge! ...Read more

Talk to your doctor: My intuition is telling me that discontinuation or changing the dose may be a consideration although i would try to talk to a doctor about this before proceeding. If you start having thoughts of harm to self or those around you then i would definitely think about getting to an emergency department. Stay safe! ...Read more

Began taking Prozac (fluoxetine) a week ago. Today I'm really depressed, sad and weepy. Definitely worse, since I'm on it for anxiety. Is this from Prozac (fluoxetine)?

Probably not: Prozac (Fluoxetine) takes up to six weeks to become effective in the treatment of Depression and Anxiety. After one week, it is not likely that you are getting effects from it. However, some patients become depressed that the medication has not caused change. Discuss this with your prescribing physician. ...Read more

Can Prozac (fluoxetine) accelerate depression?

Can Prozac (fluoxetine) accelerate depression?

Prozac (fluoxetine): One old hypothesis was that some severely depressed patients who had thoughts of self-harm & had no energy to carry on the act, when given medication that gave them extra energy fast, that they carried on the act of self-harm before they had the chance to work thru their depression. Again, this is only hypothetical, since data re. The subject are scarce & not much is written about it. ...Read more

Depression: Prozac (fluoxetine) and similar medications can take several weeks to reach full effectiveness. After and even within that time period, if your depression worsens, it will be important to contact your physician, as you may need a change in dosage or to shift to a different medication. I would like Prozac (fluoxetine) not for depression but to lower my sexdrive. Could i lie to my dr. And get some?

Why lie?: It is an off label but legitimate use for prozac (fluoxetine). However, bipolar disorder does need to be ruled out as a cause of your elevated sex drive or else Prozac (fluoxetine) could actually make it worse. Please be very straightforward with your physician and i think you will be rewarded with good results. Best wishes. ...Read more

I am suffering with antenatal depression and just been prescribed prozac (fluoxetine). Should i try it out for a bit before returning to work?

Pregnant & depressed: Being pregnant and depressed is not easy. Please don't assume Prozac (fluoxetine) should be your sole treatment of depression. Results are much better when combined with psychotherapy, so please make sure this is part of your treatment. Timing your return to work depends on your discussions with your psychiarist & your therapist. Prozac (fluoxetine) will take 4-6 weeks to show effectiveness. ...Read more

Taking 60 mg prozac (fluoxetine). Really struggling w/ depression. Feel hopeless and lifeless and its hard to care anymore. I want to feel better again?

There's hope..: Here are some things i'd like to know: who is treating you? Your family doc or a psychiatrist? How long have you been on Prozac (fluoxetine) at this dose? Have you been on any other meds, either alone or with the prozac (fluoxetine)? Are you seeing a therapist? You need to see your doctor and let them know how bad you are feeling. Get a referral for a therapist if you don't have one. You can feel a lot better! ...Read more

I was put on Prozac (fluoxetine) for severe depression, how many years is the recovery usually?

I was put on Prozac (fluoxetine) for severe depression, how many years is the recovery usually?

Weeks, not years: You may feel better in a matter of weeks, not years! if this is your first serious depression and treatment goes well, you may be able to stop Prozac (fluoxetine) after 6-12 months. If you've had more than one episode, your doctor will want you to take medicine longer as a precaution. It's possible for depression to last years, but usually not, especially not if treated. Good luck. ...Read more

What are the long term side effects of using prozac (fluoxetine)? I currently use it for my depression.

What are the long term side effects of using prozac (fluoxetine)? I currently use it for my depression.

There are issues: I agree with dr. Lindenbaum about prozac's relative safety, but there are issues in some people. You may never experience any problem, and your doctor may have prescribed it appropriately (for moderate to severe depression). But some have had movement disorders or "tics" develop - which may or may not go away. You may want to read dr. Joseph glenmullen's well-researched book "prozac backlash.". ...Read more
