I am just wondering between wellubutrin and Prozac (fluoxetine) which drug is less harsh or should I say safer to take, and for long term use which one is better?
Relative safety: Within appropriate dosage limits, both are safe and effective for depression. However, they have different neurotransmitter profiles. Prozac has anti-anxiety effects which wellbutrin (bupropion) does not have; wellbutrin (bupropion) has less potential effects on sexual function. If you have a seizure disorder, brain tumor, or an eating disorder, wellbutrin (bupropion) would not be safe for you but Prozac might still be.See 2 more doctor answers
I am on Prozac (fluoxetine) 60 mg also take Valium 10mg but it does not help much at all I go so much anxiety I believe Prozac (fluoxetine) is doing good for long term?
Anxiety: Prozac (fluoxetine) can be used long-term. I try to avoid long -term use of benzodiazapines. What are you doing besides taking medication? Cognitive Behavioral therapy or psychotherapy can be effective. Aim for daily exercise, 8 hours of sleep per night & good nutrition w 5 servings of veggies & 4 of fruit per day. Try tai chi, yoga, Qi Gong, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises & meditation
What are the long term side effects of using prozac (fluoxetine)? I currently use it for my depression.
There are issues: I agree with dr. Lindenbaum about prozac's relative safety, but there are issues in some people. You may never experience any problem, and your doctor may have prescribed it appropriately (for moderate to severe depression). But some have had movement disorders or "tics" develop - which may or may not go away. You may want to read dr. Joseph glenmullen's well-researched book "prozac backlash.".See 1 more doctor answer
Dr wants to put my 16yr old on Prozac (fluoxetine) for selective mutism. Worried about side effects and long term effects? Does it stunt growth? Risks vs benefits?
Does stopping Prozac (fluoxetine) suddenly (low to moderate dose) cause major long term consequences, such as brain damage and IQ loss?
Depression: Each patient is different. Many people are on that medication for several years. When a patient starts on this medication patient should stay on it for 6 to 9 months after that they try to wean the patient off the medication gradually. See you doctor.See 5 more doctor answers
2 to 8 weeks: The initial improvement is usually felt at least on some day within two to 4 weeks. If used for ocd, significant improvement can take up to 12 weeks. In severe pms it can work within a day or two because it is working through a different mechanism. Best wishes to you.
More than 2 weeks: The half life of this medication is as long as three days. It will be out of your system in 15 days depending on individual factors related to the patient. Ask your prescriber.
Prozac (fluoxetine): Usually after one week you would see some response, then within 4-5 weeks for full efficacy at the therapeutic dose.
About a week: There's 2 related questions here. It takes about a week for fluoxetine (prozac) to leave the body after dosing has stopped. This is longer than other antidepressants. But all antidepressants, including prozac, continue to have an effect on mood for 2-3 weeks after they're stopped. The brain effect persists a couple weeks even after the drug is gone.See 1 more doctor answer

3 weeks or more: Most ssris start to show effectiveness against depression about 2 weeks after starting them. Prozac (fluoxetine) is about 1 week slower due to its long half-life (it takes longer to reach a steady blood level). So a good estimate is about 3 weeks. But everybody's different; some people feel better faster, others need to wait longer. Also, improvement is gradual, it doesn't become "effective" all at once.
1 to 2 weeks: All medications in this group (ssri) take 1-2 weeks for full effect.
About a week: There's 2 related questions here. It takes a little under a week for fluoxetine (prozac) to leave the body after dosing has stopped. This is longer than other antidepressants. But all antidepressants, including prozac, continue to have an effect on mood for 2-3 weeks after they're stopped. The brain effect persists that long even after the drug is gone.
Depends: The effects of a medication like Prozac (fluoxetine) depend on why you are taking it. In cases of depression, a positive effect can be seen in as little as 1-2 weeks. However, for anxiety disorders, especially hard to treat ones like ocd, effects sometimes take up to 2 months to be seen.See 1 more doctor answer
Usually 6 weeks.: It takes at least 3 weeks for medications like Prozac and lexapro (escitalopram) to start working well. Usually if you feel better but not 100% in about 4-6 weeks, the dose needs to be increased. If it is not helping at all, it may be the wrong medication, and you should follow up with your doctor.
Up to 5 wks: It is difficult to determine the exact duration prozac will stay in the system, because people metabolize prozac at different rates. The longest it would probably stay in the system is 5 wks, (this is the "safe" washout time when there is no risk for drug interaction with MAO inhibitors.). Prozac has a half life of 7-9 days (pretty large margin there). but that does not mean it is out in 14-18 d.
