I am just wondering between wellubutrin and Prozac (fluoxetine) which drug is less harsh or should I say safer to take, and for long term use which one is better?

I am just wondering between wellubutrin and Prozac (fluoxetine) which drug is less harsh or should I say safer to take, and for long term use which one is better?

Relative safety: Within appropriate dosage limits, both are safe and effective for depression. However, they have different neurotransmitter profiles. Prozac has anti-anxiety effects which wellbutrin (bupropion) does not have; wellbutrin (bupropion) has less potential effects on sexual function. If you have a seizure disorder, brain tumor, or an eating disorder, wellbutrin (bupropion) would not be safe for you but Prozac might still be.

Anxiety: Prozac (fluoxetine) can be used long-term. I try to avoid long -term use of benzodiazapines. What are you doing besides taking medication? Cognitive Behavioral therapy or psychotherapy can be effective. Aim for daily exercise, 8 hours of sleep per night & good nutrition w 5 servings of veggies & 4 of fruit per day. Try tai chi, yoga, Qi Gong, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises & meditation

What are the long term side effects of using prozac (fluoxetine)? I currently use it for my depression.

What are the long term side effects of using prozac (fluoxetine)? I currently use it for my depression.

There are issues: I agree with dr. Lindenbaum about prozac's relative safety, but there are issues in some people. You may never experience any problem, and your doctor may have prescribed it appropriately (for moderate to severe depression). But some have had movement disorders or "tics" develop - which may or may not go away. You may want to read dr. Joseph glenmullen's well-researched book "prozac backlash.".

How long does it take for Prozac (fluoxetine) to leave the body?

About a week: There's 2 related questions here. It takes about a week for fluoxetine (prozac) to leave the body after dosing has stopped. This is longer than other antidepressants. But all antidepressants, including prozac, continue to have an effect on mood for 2-3 weeks after they're stopped. The brain effect persists a couple weeks even after the drug is gone.

How long does it take for Prozac (fluoxetine) to become effective?

How long does it take for Prozac (fluoxetine) to become effective?

3 weeks or more: Most ssris start to show effectiveness against depression about 2 weeks after starting them. Prozac (fluoxetine) is about 1 week slower due to its long half-life (it takes longer to reach a steady blood level). So a good estimate is about 3 weeks. But everybody's different; some people feel better faster, others need to wait longer. Also, improvement is gradual, it doesn't become "effective" all at once.

How long does it take Prozac (fluoxetine) to reach the best possible result?

How long does it take Prozac (fluoxetine) to reach the best possible result?

Usually 6 weeks.: It takes at least 3 weeks for medications like Prozac and lexapro (escitalopram) to start working well. Usually if you feel better but not 100% in about 4-6 weeks, the dose needs to be increased. If it is not helping at all, it may be the wrong medication, and you should follow up with your doctor.

I took Prozac 10mg for two days. How long will it take to get out of my system?

Up to 5 wks: It is difficult to determine the exact duration prozac will stay in the system, because people metabolize prozac at different rates. The longest it would probably stay in the system is 5 wks, (this is the "safe" washout time when there is no risk for drug interaction with MAO inhibitors.). Prozac has a half life of 7-9 days (pretty large margin there). but that does not mean it is out in 14-18 d.
