What is the difference between pt (protrombim time) and ptt (partial thromboplastin time)?

What is the difference between pt (protrombim time) and ptt (partial thromboplastin time)?

Two pathways: The process of coagulation follows two pathways, and pt measures the constituents of the extrinsic pathway and PTT measure the constituents of intrinsic pathway. There is a common final pathway for both sides. The tests help in diagnosing the type of coagulation abnormality, e.g., pt is prolonged on treatment with coumadin/warfarin and PTT is prolonged with heparin. ...Read more

Any symptoms?: Why were these tests done? Do you have any symptoms? All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. A slightly prolonged PTT in isolation is not a cause for concern, but it would be important to know why your doctor ordered the tests. Lupus is one of the causes of prolonged ptt. ...Read more

Why don't ttp/itp increase pt/aptt time?

Platelet problems: Pro time and partial thromboplastin time measure the ability of the liquid portion of the blood to go solid when it should. In thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, the platelets -- formed elements that plug holes -- don't work as they should. Different components of the hemostasis system. ...Read more

Is it possible to have polycythemia vera with normal pt, ptt, & INR plus normal bleeding time? High rbc, hgb, & hct.

Yes: Pt, ptt, inr and bleeding time have no role in the diagnosis of p. Vera. If you're eighteen years old, i'd look hard for a different cause if you are actually significantly polycythemic. There are plenty of really fit young men whose hemoglobin is a bit higher than the reference range -- athleticism to odd hemoglobin genes to something in your "gym health drink" you don't know about. Good luck. ...Read more

There is published research in europe showing that these medications can be used effectively for your type of problem. My personal bias is that you should wait until more research has been done. Your doctor can help advise you as to the status of this research as it evolves. ...Read more
