Prostate Specific Antigen (Overview)

Psa is a protein made in the prostate gland that functions to liquefy sperm. It is a serine protease made by both normal and malignant prostate glands. Commonly used as a screening test for prostate cancer, the psa test is widely used to detect which men would benefit from a prostate biopsy as well as detect cancer recurrence in men who have been treated for prostate cancer.

What is the function of prostate-specific antigen in normal males?

What is the function of prostate-specific antigen in normal males?

A functional protein: It is a glycoprotein made by the cells of the prostate. Psa liquefies/thins out the semen in the seminal glands and allows sperm to swim freely. It is also believed to be instrumental in dissolving the cervical mucus, allowing the entry of sperm into the uterus and up etc....Beyond that, I have no idea what else it does. It is used as tumor marker for prostate cancer monitoring etc. Good luck. ...Read more

Psa prostatic specific antigen of my father is 1.87 ng/ml is that normal?

Normally 0 to 4: Minor variability among laboratory reference range, but normally between 0-4 is considered normal. But, for some one who had a total prostatectomy (removal of prostate for cancer etc.), any level above 0 is considered abnormal. So, usually 1.8 is normal, but the rate of change is also of some importance. Follow up with doc regularly. Good luck. ...Read more

I read that you have millions of B cells. How does one B cell find the right specific antigen it fits to if there's so many of them?

Antigens get held...: Each B cell recognizes only 1 unique antigen. We need > 1 million B cells to ensure most antigens are recognized. Collectively, B cells could likely recognize any organic molecule that could exist. The process does not rely on random encounters. Specialized cells trap and hold antigens where circulating B cells get the chance to recognize them. ...Read more
