I started taking progestin only birth control week ago, since i started it it seems like my baby doesn't want to nurse as long as normal, why is this?
Of progestin-only birth control options available in the US, which tend to cause the least side effects?
Same: There are progestin only pills, shots, implants, and IUD's. The side effect profiles for each are similar because the mechanism of action and the effect of each drug on the body is the same. The number one side effect is irregular and unpredictable bleeding. Number two is weight gain due to the appetite stimulation of progestins - if you eat more you gain weight. ...Read more
There is: No 'one' best pill for this purpose, they all work to some degree and usually it's trial and error finding a 'best' one for an individual woman. Medroxyprogesterone, megestrol, and Norethindrone are all available in the us. Should, or does?: It should only last for a month or so - but if it lasts longer, it may be difficult to stop. Some people will have to discontinue certain birth control pills due to irregular or unpredictable bleeding. SAM e: Supplementation with s-adenosylmethionine (sam-e), has also been promoted as treatment for osteoarthritis. A meta-analysis of rcts (randomized controlled trials) found that sam-e is as effective as nsaids in reducing pain and disability, and has a better safety profile. I did not see any evidence that it causes weight gain. Whether it has any interaction with progestin based ocp's is not known. ...Read more

I have had severe depression for 2 yrs. I recently became pregnant (6weeks) & depression is completely gone. I have been on progestin only birth control at my highest depression period so I don't think it's that. Could it be the increase in estrogen?
Pregnancy hormones: A pregnancy generates increased levels of many hormones and it is not unusual to see depression improve and the need for medication reduced or eliminated. Whether this is from a single hormone like estrogen or multiple hormones is difficult to say. Unfortunately, depression is very likely to return after the pregnancy so that should be planned for. ...Read more
Does Diflucan 150mg (for a yeast infection) affect the effectiveness of progestin only birth control pill (mini pill)?
Probably not: Fluconazole (Diflucan) is not known to have any such affect. Indeed, the whole business about antibiotics and hormonal contraception is mostly an urban myth. The vast majority of antibiotics, taken for short courses (under 2 weeks) in the usual doses, have no effect at all. Virtually nobody ever gets pregnant on account of taking antibiotics. Effectiveness...: Progesterone-only pills are not as effective at pregnancy prevention as pills containing both estrogen and progesterone.
