Im 6w2d pregnant & taking oral progesterone due to miscarriage & low prog at pregnant confirmation with ob. My symptoms r disappearing. Is it possible for progesterone to mask the symptoms of a miscarriage?
No: Progesterone will not mask a miscarriage. Progesterone therapy will seldom prevent a miscarriage. Miscarriages are very common - occurring in 1/5 of pregnancies at least. Most miscarriages are due to large chromosomal/ genetic abnormalities which occur at conception. We have no control over these and they seem to be a matter of chance. If you miscarry once again there are further tests to do. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Pregnant & was rx'd progesterone to prevent miscarriage. I am still nursing my toddler.Safe to take this? My doctor's policy is: no to anything listed as "prob safe" even tho plasma levels are low.
Yes.: It's a cause of recurrent miscarriages, though it isn't very common. If a patient suffers 2 consecutive miscarriages (without a full-term pregnancy in between) that meets the minimal criteria to be diagnosed with 'recurrent miscarriages' (though some dr's use 3 miscarriages). It can be tested for. Progesterone supplementation is very safe, and many doctors will offer it to patients. ...Read more

Maybe: A low Progesterone really indicates poor ovulation or poor egg quality. Usually the low Progesterone level indicates that the environment under which the egg was produced is less than optimal. What are other reason for recurrent miscarriages besides progesterone, clotting, luteal phase, and chromosome abnormality?
Does taking progesterone supplements prevent a miscarriage that would have happened because of genetic defects?
Miscarriages: If you are at 24 weeks, you are beyond where progesterone can assist in avoiding miscarriage. The placenta produces progesterone once the ovary (corpus luteum) stops making it at about 16-18 weeks. Progesterone in early pregnancy can help prevent miscarriages but most with a genetic basis will occur in any event, since genetic abnormalities are rarely minor. ...Read more

Luteal phase defect: Your two miscarriages may have been the result of an inadequate amount of progesterone to support the developing pregnancy, thus the miscarriages. Your MD is suggesting progesterone to remedy that problem. Every medication has risks and benefits. You must decide for yourself if the very small chance of cancer is worth the benefit of a "bundle of joy" at home. ...Read more

Possibly: There are many unknowns in early pregnancy loss, and its more than theoretically possible that a failing pregnancy could be maintained for a while but Crinone (progesterone gel) support. For this exact reason, I do not supplement until we have confirmed viability in most cases. Very sorry about the loss. ...Read more

Taking oral progesterone due to 2 miscarriages. Last period on 7/6. Ovulated & started progesterone 7/24. Sense of smell very strong and sore breasts?
Ouch!: The symptoms you are experiencing are likely d/t the Progesterone- remember the breast swelling just before your period? Prog levels are highest then; and that is part of it's function, to also enrich the uterus to sustain pregnancy. First, let me empathize, my wife took Prog to maintain her pregnancy (our only one!) Also, you may get pregnant underneath this, so much the better! Good Luck! ...Read more
