How can I treat severe anemia?

How can I treat severe anemia?

Depends on cause: Anemia is a symptom like fever, and the underlying cause needed to be treated. You should see your primary care provider for an evaluation. You may take oral iron and multivitamin supplements while trying to make an appointment. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Severe anemia: One can die from severe anemia from massive acute bleeding due to hypoxia - decrease oxygenation to vitals organ that resulting in organ failure. When anemia iis a slow ongoing/chronic process- our body can compensate. When it is severe enough- enlargement of the heart /cardiomegaly and congestive heart failure can happen. Could I have died from my severe anemia?

Could I have died from my severe anemia?

How severe?: I have seen a young lady die of severe anemia after a hemoglobin of 3 for a week, after chronic hemoglobins of 5. I have rarely seen problems with hemoglobins over five, though I will typically transfuse in the 7's to keep the hemoglobin above 8. Acutely, we probably will see cardiac effects from bleeding or hemolysis losses of four pints of blood or less. Chronic anemia can be compensated.

Healthy lifestyle: You will need to discuss with your doctor in pertain to your anemia, what is the cause, what is the treatment etc. The treatment will depend on the cause. Eating the right food is really the key here- rather than eating too much food. Eating the right food does not mean you have to eat a lot. To lose weight, you should burn more calories than the calories you take. Healthy lifestyle is crucial.

Can severe anemia cause dizziness?

Can severe anemia cause dizziness?

Yes: Blood cells are what carry oxygen to the brain. If you have too few blood cells then you may have too little oxygen getting to the brain. This may especially occur when you stand up or when you are exercising. If the brain is not getting enough blood flow, you will feel light headed and may even faint. That is why you have to be careful after blood donation.

Can severe anemia cause constipation?

Can severe anemia cause constipation?

No, but look further: Severe anemia is an unlikely cause for constipation and vice versa. Anemia and constipation can both be caused by cancer of the colon, however, so the greatest concern should be their occurring together, but not one actually causing the other. Further studies should be pursued when anemia and constipation show up at about the same time.

13
What does having severe anemia mean in terms of physical health?

Usually fatigue: Anemia means that your oxygen carrying capacity is lowered, which leads to general feelings of fatigue, malaise and lack of energy. It often also means you don't fight off disease as well (lowers your immune system). So, overall, you are dimished in capacity.

How long after taking iron pills for six weeks do I recover from symptoms of severe anemia.

Can take a while: If you were severely anemic because of iron deficiency, 6 weeks of oral iron is probably not long enough. Your body will start to be able to make new red blood cells much more robustly when you start taking the iron, and many people start to feel better in a week or two. To replenish your body's iron stores, however, you may need to take iron 6 months or more. Talk with your doc for guidance.

See doctor: You need to find out the cause of the anemia. Some anemia may be due to bleeding, malignancy, genetics etc... When the cause is found a treatment plan may be formulated by your doctor.

Why do patients with severe anemia may be compromised if transfused with large quantities of long stored blood?

Ask your doctor: I am not too concerned about using old blood as there is no serious complication due to use of long stored blood. Ask your doctor why you needed the blood transfusion...That is much more important to find out and treating the cause.

Is cardiomegaly a complication associated with severe anemia?

Is cardiomegaly a complication associated with severe anemia?

Not usually: Although there are ways to link heart enlargement to the presence of severe anemia, it would be a stretch to make it a "complication". These may be two independent conditions, both of which require attention.
