Productive Cough After Flu
Productive choking cough worse after 10days, chest/ears clear throat sore.No fever but sinus headache. Yellow-bloody phelgm. Secondary virus?
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Had common cold with fever. Fever gone now, just nasal congestion and productive cough. Phlegm appears green. Paranoid about pneumonia?
Don't worry.: Pneumonia will give you a fever and your symptoms would have gotten worse, not better, without treatment. It is common to have congestion and cough when recovering from an upper respiratory infection, the majority of which are caused by viruses. not bacteria. If you get sick again, go see your primary MD for evaluation and maybe an xray, if necessary. ...Read more
Uri with 103 fever, chills was improving, now worsened with lost voice, sore throat, unproductive cough, sinus congestion (yellow mucus). Pneumonia?
Check temperature: I agree that most likely you do not have bacterial pneumonia which some patients develop following a viral infection. Viruses may cause damage to the lining of the airway. In the meantime, a humidifier and staying well hydrated, while recovering are suggested. If you have problems breathing and/or fever, please see your physician. If the cough lasts longer than 3 weeks, follow up is advised. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Pneumonia, bronchitis or flu shortness of breath. Coughing, wheezing, chills, fever, bodyaches, headache
Hello. : Hello. Can not distinguish between these three diagnoses based on this information. You will need a medical history, a physical examination to include auscultation of your lungs and you might need a chest xray as well. They will probably check your blood oxygen level and may also do some lab tests. Would play it safe and get evaluated at the emergency room, as there is a possibility that you could have pneumonia. Hope you feel better soon. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

If you are still producing sputum, please see your PCP for a sputum culture, screening for Strep and other bacterial causes. If there is a prolonged viral illness, inflammatory changes may occur in the airway, and the need for an anti inflammatory drug can be evaluated.

Hello. : Hello. Don't know how old you are or if you have asthma. I can't diagnose your condition. It sounds like you may have had a viral infection which may have developed into bronchitis. What is of significant concern is that you are wheezing every time you breath and your inhaler is not helping. Regardless of the cause, your airways are overly reactive. If you are having trouble breathing, you need to go to the emergency room right now. If your breathing is not labored with just a little wheeze, than recommend you call your doctor in the morning. Since you are not responding to the medication that you have, your doctor may need to prescribe additional medication, at least temporarily to reduce spasm in your airways. Take care. ...Read more

Went to doc on Sat diagnosed me with flu, no tests given. I was given Tamiflu (oseltamivir) but my cough is getting worse and the phlegm is very dark green. ?
I've had a wheeze and a mild cough for two weeks, and haven't ever really felt like I have flu. I'm not asthmatic. There has been phlegm build up too.
Common issue: Many URI viruses will attack & trigger the upper airway wheezing mechanism common to asthma without triggering real asthma events. They alter the mucous production & distribution in the lungs & can take up to a month to fade. A simple mucous medication like Mucinex can help thin secretions but it should pass over time. See your doc if it lasts more than a month or there are other issues. ...Read more
