Hernia Surgery (Definition)

There are a variety or several types of hernias, and many are repaired differently. A hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall (such as inguinal, umbilical, incisional) or diaphragm (hiatal hernia). Surgery to repair the hernia can involve use of sutures, and possible use of mesh. Open or laparoscopic surgery can be a means to repair hernias, with laparoscopic ...Read more

I had an inguinal hernia surgery (open repair) in 2010.I want to know if nerves are trapped during hernia surgery how this problem can be resolved?

I had an inguinal hernia surgery (open repair) in 2010.I want to know if nerves are trapped during hernia surgery how this problem can be resolved?

Ilioinguinal nerve: It is possible that a nerve in the area (ilioinguinal) is giving you trouble. Other nerves may be involved. Other options include hernia recurrence (sometimes can't feel on outside) or routine strain injuries to name a few. A surgeon can inject anesthetic at a certain area where the ilioinguinal nerve runs (near ASIS) to see if it is an issue. If it is, part of nerve may be removed to help.

I had an inguinal hernia surgery in 2010, feel pain at surgical side after ejaculating. Is there any way to find out if scar tissue is actual problem?

I had an inguinal hernia surgery in 2010, feel pain at surgical side after ejaculating. Is there any way to find out if scar tissue is actual problem?

Not really: I'm sorry this is happening. Groin pain a known possible consequence of this surgery. Most surgeons will not operate on just pain -too much risk (and can make it worse). A neuroma is often the cause, or a nerve impinged by a suture inside. Most imaging will not help define anything. Hope it gets better.

I had an open repair inguinal hernia surgery 3 years back. I feel pain when I ejaculate. Can this problem be solved by medicines or need a re-operation?

I had an open repair inguinal hernia surgery 3 years back. I feel pain when I ejaculate. Can this problem be solved by medicines or need a re-operation?

See a Urologist: It is very unlikely that the hernia operation has anything to do with your feelings after ejaculation. A urologist may be able to treat this with medication and can also check to see if you have another hernia, but a recurrent hernia is unlikely in a young person just a few years later.

I had an inguinal hernia surgery (open repair) in 2010.I feel pain at surgical when I ejaculate. How can find out if scar tissue tissue is the problem?

Surgery: This sounds as if scar has formed around the repair. The vas, blood vessels and nerves can be trapped in the scar tissue and cause pain. The only way to know for sure is to go in and take a look. This can fix it but it can also make it worse. Some times injections can help, but removing the scar is the way to go then hope that the scar doesn't recur. Talk to your surgeon.

After inguinal hernia surgery is the pain worse the next day?

Incisional pain: You are experiencing incisional pain which can last a few days after surgery. It should settle down in a few days as will the swelling that is expected after surgery. Hope this helps.

After inguinal hernia surgery is it true that I won't get another hernia again?

Not true: While the surgeon tries his best rarely recurrent hernia can be a problem. Hope for the best and good luck!

What is involved in the two week follow up exam after inguinal hernia surgery? Is this the only follow up appointment?

Possible but...: At least, one postop visit after inguinal heniorrhaphy is reasonable to check how the "wound" heals and if the postop resolution has been as expected, and give some advice for future lifestyle. More? Ask Doc face to face, and don't leave related doubts in mind. Best wish. ..

5 weeks after inguinal hernia surgery now for last 3 days area suddenly feels stiff with occasional pain and heaviness like a brick. Is it normal?

I don't think: This is normal, but I can't imagine anything going on 5 weeks post op. Show it to your surgeon. Maybe mesh reaction, if you had one placed.

I am having ED after inguinal hernia surgery. A mesh was placed in me. I am very worried, I will not be the same. Can I have an explanation of to why.

Unusual: It would be highly unusual to have long-term or permanent ED after undergoing inguinal hernia surgery with mesh placement. May be due to postop pain for now. Are you still having pain? Please check with your surgeon.

Is having discomfort and minor aches approximately one year after inguinal hernia surgery normal?

Is having discomfort and minor aches approximately one year after inguinal hernia surgery normal?

Yes and no: If the pain started after some physical activity like a heavy lifting it could be normal pending how the hernia was repaired open or laproscopic with or without screen or mesh. It it happen without any incident then it is not normal. Take ibuprofen 600-800 mg after each meal for a week. Either way if pain persisted see your doctor

Is it normal to have discomfort near and below incision site one year after inguinal hernia surgery on right side?

Here are some...: The reported lingering discomfort near and below the incision for inguinal herniorrhaphy is nothing uncommon and may eventual fade away, but could last forever. Despite such uncertainty, doing nothing if tolerable is still the most practical care after learning how to adopt and adapt to such postoperative consequence, although very occasionally additional invasive procedure may be needed.

What if one testicle now hangs lower after inguinal hernia surgery? Is this normal?

Sounds normal: One testicle almost always hangs lower than the other; this is normal in all men. (Most commonly the left is lower, but it can go either way.) I'm guessing it's always been that way for you and you're now just looking more closely. Hernia surgery is not likely to make much difference -- but even if it does, it's not a health concern.

What are symptoms of nerve entrapment/injury after inguinal hernia surgery. And if exist how to detect that one is nerve entrapment?

Clinical: Sharp/burning/lancinating pain traveling from the incision to the pubic area, scrotum, or thigh, tingling sensation in these area, pain with stretching, coughing/sneezing, pain relief w/ local anesthetic injection are usually diagnostic. Imaging study (e.g. Mri, us) is rarely needed. Symptoms may occur soon after surgery, or months to years later. Neurectomy has a 90% cure rate.
