I have been on the same medication for chronic pain. I am disabled and pain keeps me in bed. I recently went to my monthly visit and thru a pa my doctor cut my pain medicine totally in half (only one that relieved me) and put me on something longer lastin
Physicians really can be in a bind some times. It can be difficult to acheive a balance between adequate control of pain and concerns about developing tolerance or side effects to strong narcotics. It may be even trickier when a doctor has over-sight of the care delivered by a physician's assistant. Each physician is different in his or her approach to chronic pain and regarding what pain relievers and medication combinations they are comfortable prescribing.
It is best when the pa/ doctor and patient are working as a team and keep each other informed of what is going on.
I would like to present another option. There are many do's and md's in the United States who are trained to provide medical acupuncture. Some doctors provide acupuncture as their sole practice. However, there are more and more internists, anesthesiologists, psychiatrists, family doctors, sports medicine specialists etc, who practice acupuncture as one of a number of treatment modalities. Acupuncture has the potential to offer excellent relief for both chronic pain conditions and for acute problems. Often chronic pain patients are able to reduce the amount of narcotics they take and in some situations can come off some of their medications altogether. It could be a beneficial adjunct to the care you are already receiving. If you are interested, discuss this with your medical provider. Good luck. ...Read more
